Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

I would get a nice snug metal tube, that contacts the inner metal ring of the worm gear, not the plastic. Use that to drive the gear home. I would also help fitting if the gear is heated up in hot water prior to fitting.

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

The way I read the TSB its the early small diameter, but wide bearing did not have a spacer fitted. I would fit a new 13H6968 bearing and put it back together as it came apart. Having another close look at the photo what I thought initially looked to be wear. could well be assembly grease

What's that at the bottom of the hole. It looks to me like the missing spacer. From the picture looks like its a seperate part. However the inner bearing face of the first motion shaft is badly worn and pitted.

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

The Narrow bearing is clearly wrong. I think Chris had sorted a couple of part numbers out. If you got a spacer would take the wide bearing to the end of main shaft. Personally I don't think its over important (better if you can get one though). Both the 1st motion shaft and main shaft are held in p...

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

I would expect the spacer to be used with the narrower type bearing are you able to photograph the wide original bearing on the end of the main shaft and another picture of the original bearing in the 1st motion shaft

Re: The old steering rack bush trouble

If you plug the hole with a self tapping screw, loctited in the rack lubricant wont be able to leak out of the hole.

Re: What did you do to your Marina today?

A Simple Check is just to use a Voltmeter, across the battery terminals. With the engine running at 2000RPM and all electrical consumers on, you should expect to see 14 Volts. A fully charged battery is 13.8 Volts. The Main trouble with a Dynamo is a poor charging rate at low RPM and idle speed. Whe...

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

Make sure you have fully understood why its coming to pieces. Is it just bearing noise? Does it crunch wen changing gear? Does it chatter in gears? Having accurate diagnosis important. This allows you to focus on the areas of the gearbox, that are giving trouble when stripping it. From point of view...

Re: Mk one saloon prices

My Opinion on general classic car prices of late, especially on ebay. Are over optimistic to say the least, almost every rusty heap dragged out of the hedge is Very Rare!!! no reserve!! with a stupid starting price. Even at the other end of the scale nice cars are listed, as prices rising rapidly gr...

Spooky that was reading earlier about them, on ar online. Have seen them all, apart the Austin 1800 one at Gaydon. Surprising thing is some 40 years later how much of this actual technology, has made it onto todays cars ! interlocking doors with door bars from 1800 virtually standard. impact absorbi...

Re: Ignition light problem.

If fault only appeared after replacing regulator. Refit original see if fault goes away. Have you wired it up correctly ? see attached wiring diagrams for both two and three bobbin types.
