Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

I have been doing some more research and turned this up on the net, dated 1975. It confirms the engine number for the change of bearing and the order of fitment of the earlier bearing and spacer. The spacer definitely is fitted onto the main shaft before the bearing. If the old spacer is trapped in ...

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

Bren, I quoted all the part numbers earlier in the topic.

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

What's that at the bottom of the hole. It looks to me like the missing spacer. From the picture looks like its a seperate part. However the inner bearing face of the first motion shaft is badly worn and pitted. Dave I think David could be right, it looks like the missing spacer is in the back of th...

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

Would a spacer push the bearing up to the end of the shaft?

If the spacer is missing then, either BL missed it out on the production line, or your gearbox has been badly rebuilt previously.

Both are possible.

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

Bren, it occurred to me that the spacer may still be stuck on the front of the main shaft.

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

I agree David, the early one used the spacer according to the BL parts manual.

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

The spacer DAM739 has been superseded by DAM3908.

All the parts are available from Rimmer Bros

If your old caged bearing has a manufacturer and part number on it, then quote it to your reconditioning kit supplier and they should be able to supply one for you.

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

Right here you go,

Early cage bearing (small) 13H 6968

Later cage bearing (larger) 13H 9513

The spacer is DAM 739, it looks like it was only used with the early caged bearing.

Re: About to tackle the gearbox, anyone got any tips?

From memory of a conversation with Darren White (RIP), early Mk1 gearboxes had a smaller caged bearing (no.82), but the torque of the engines would wreck them, so later bearings were larger. They are common with Triumph versions of the gearbox, early Herald/Spitfire/Early Dolomite and later versions...

Re: The old steering rack bush trouble

If you drill underneath you can create a drain for the rack lubricant, drying out the entire rack.

Re: The old steering rack bush trouble

Yes if you take the boot off you can get to it.

Try drilling an extra hole vertically above the other one, for an extra securing screw, you can just get in unber the bonnet with a cordless drill, keep the swarfe out of the rack.

Re: The old steering rack bush trouble

It sounds like the Nolathane bush has pulled out of the rack housing. If you can remove the grub screw(s) that position it in the rack, and squint through the hole, you should be able to see the red bush. If it’s not there then it has pulled out. I have had no reports of any bush wearing so far and ...
