Re: Spark plugs

The siamesed port system, leads to something called “charge robbing”, for each siamesed pair, the first inlet valve to open starts the air/fuel mix off in that direction and even as the valve closes the momentum of the air continues in that direction, so the second valve gets robbed of part of its ...

Re: Spark plugs

A chip like that is most likely to have been caused when the plugs were fitted or removed, it looked like a “percussion” chip, where the ceramic nose has been caught creating a weak spot. Then the heat/cold cycle has opened it up until the chip came off.

Re: Spark plugs

I’m with David on spark plug choice, NKG plugs have a much lower failure rate than ALL the well known European and US brands.

Re: Leyland Marina panel differences

Very interesting stuff, they must have been worried about the weight of the Red 6 engine, as this would brace the top of the inner wing, it would also cover the rust trap behind where the bonnet hinges are.

Re: What did you do to your Marina today?

Mick,

I checked a fellow club members car the other week and the float chamber gaskets had a fold in it at one of the screw holes, we sorted that and it stopped leaking, there was a lovely tell tale mark down the side of the float chamber, onto the exhaust manifold - a bit scary.

Re: LPR 1305 Brake master cylinder

I agree with David, the Maina uses 3/8” unf brake pipe unions, this one is clearly marked as M10 x 1.0 which is metric.

Re: Top ball joint question

Close, but not quite, very early cars (Josh will know the date or last chassis number), had different geometry, the trunnions were different and the upper and lower arm held the upright at a different angle. If you fit just later trunnions to those, you get loads of negative camber. Way too much for...

Re: Top ball joint question

Short history lesson, in 1970 ish, the big thing was avoiding Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH). If you ever drove a Mk1 or MK 2 Cortina and then the Mk3 (coke bottle) Cortina you’ll recognise the difference. All the manufacturers built loads of rubber into suspension, engine & gearbox bushes, to r...

Re: Top ball joint question

Exactly right Paul, the kit shown in the pic is the conversion steel bush type, to eliminate the rubber/polyurethane top hat bushes from the ‘big hole’ shock absorbers. It became recognised that the top rubber bushes were having no or a negative effect on the suspension allowing the top of the uprig...
