Dispersal of British Car Museum collection (Napier, NZ)

For sale: 500 British cars (and a museum) There's something about the scent of old British cars... Part leather, part steel and part oil, with a faint hint of damp carpet, it's an aroma redolent of recalcitrant window wipers, mechanical breakdowns and cracked upholstery, but also of a distinct and ...

Re: What did you do to your Marina today?

Just realized it's been 18 months since the last time I started Ozzy. Flooded first attempt, and took a fair bit of cranking before he finally fired up. Running very rough, probably needs fresh fuel.

Re: Carpet suppliers

Are the carpets the same in saloons, coupes and estates? Or are the rear carpets different in the coupe?

Re: Converting a 4 speed gearbox to a 5 speed (1800)

These are the standard Marina diff ratios :-

These are the speeds for each combination. Changing from a 3.63 to a 3.27 drops the revs by 10%. As a comparison, I have shown the Ford Sierra 5th gear, which drops the revs by 18%.

Re: Converting a 4 speed gearbox to a 5 speed (1800)

As Balmy said, the only easy option is to fit a taller 3.27 diff. You'll also need to fit the correct speedo drive gear in the gearbox, or else the speedo will read wrong. I think the differential option thread says which one you need. Rimmer Bros sell the 3.27 crownwheel and pinion for £384.00 (inc...

Re: Engine swap for 1.8

Another option is a Suzuki Jimny/Samurai 1300 engine and gearbox. Early engines have the advantage of being carb not efi, so no need to add an extra fuel line and swirl pot.

Pictures and measurements here, from a 16v installation into a Sprite (8v shares same block).

Re: Converting a 4 speed gearbox to a 5 speed (1800)

BL made the trans tunnel as small as possible to maximise the amount of interior space, so it limits what you can fit in there.

Read this thread MORRIS MARINA/ITAL REAR AXLE/DIFFERENTIAL & OPTIONS for very detailed diff options, and this thread 1700 O Series Gearbox Options for gearbox options.

Re: Engine swap for 1.8

Doubt if there's anything widely available in North America, that would be a simple installation. In the UK, I would suggest a Rover O-series, or the later 16v M-series or T-series. The Borg Warner 35 auto can handle the extra power, where they would kill the manual gearbox. What are you wanting to ...

Re: Brain trust help.

The first number 8 signifies an export vehicle. The actual chassis number 009427 indicates a run of export vehicles and doesn’t fit into the UK chassis number runs. The P at the end indicates shipment to New Zealand. I have not seen the little aluminium tag before, but as it is riveted underneath t...
