What did you do to your Marina today?

Now fitted and working! I used a 12 inch fan and everything is a very tight fit. Only real problem that I encountered was putting the yellow fanblade back on to the water pump, because once the electric fan was fitted to the rad.....it can't pass the original fan blades. So I had to fit it back on the water pump blindly by feel. Took some fiddling with.
Another flush of the cooling system whilst everything was out. The coolant (blue glycol) was filthy black having been replaced only a matter of months ago. I also replaced the thermostat studs and nuts. Although the cork gasket that came with them was extremely soft and distorted quickly under very low tightening. . Lots of hylomar should help Out. I'll keep an eye.
Showing at Southport today.

I still buy lots of small bits from Mini Spares because I have an account with them and I buy their card thermostat gaskets. Yes they are intended for an A Series but I just have to trim a tiny sliver of card where the gasket catches on the B Series rocker box and they are fine. My Marina came with a Kenlowe fan fitted ahead of the radiator behind the grille, but the lower panel behind the grille aperture was trimmed and the rad mounted further back towards the yellow fan blades. Since I had the rad re-cored I put everything back to standard. My antifreeze came out filthy and gritty this year despite a thorough block flush and the new rad core last time.

Well... it made it to Southport! Hasn't used any coolant.

I replaced the front wheel bearings on PTH today. The n/s failed the MOT a few weeks ago so it made sense to replace both sides. I couldn't change the cups the bearing run in as I think you'd need a press to get them out but they looked ok with no scoring or pitting, after I finished, everything was fine so I left those in.
Although only advisories I have a brake line to change, adjust the rear brakes and tidy up the n/s sill and then it's MOT attempt number 2!

Re: What did you do to your Marina today?
Just spent a whole 1 hour (plus a bit then) sanding down my wheels, ready to tidy them up with some rattle can zinc primer and wheel silver. Not tomoz cos I'm out. Maybe Saturday. Clearly they won't be a concours job, because for that they'd need to be shot blasted and powder coated, but I bet my efforts with a rattle can will come out better than the previous guy's brush painting with what looks like a very fast air drying silver. #brushstrokes
I quite fancy some of those nice stainless steel trim rings, whether they were an HL option or not. Oh yeah, and this is the kind of job I would do when I was 17, so I felt 17 again. Apart from trying to get up off my knees...

The thinner princess style rings on our old family LE. The fatter Ital one's you'll easily come acrossmickthefitter wrote:Just spent a whole 1 hour (plus a bit then) sanding down my wheels, ready to tidy them up with some rattle can zinc primer and wheel silver. Oh. So Princess type are more correct then? For the 70s?
Re: RE: Re: What did you do to your Marina today?
Well they were bought just prior to the Ital being released 1979. Might have been the only ones in the unipart brochure. Although the 1700HL estate had them. Added later to the Marina range after the original mk3 inception. Personally I prefer the thinner ones as the thicker were more easily kerbed/ damaged .
Matter of your own taste I suppose

I remember my sister had some plastic ABS ones on her Corolla. Brake dust fetched all the chrome off and they turned white...
Re: What did you do to your Marina today?
I had generic larger plastic ones on a Mk2 with the centre chrome hub caps which did get damaged and the silver did deteriorate. Replaced with same in stainless steel which was a lot better. Added to the car’s appearance in a positive way.

mk2 Escorts had them. I bought a set in a scrap yard for my VW Derby in the 90's which originally had them when new, all but one were missing. If I remember, the VW version were slightly less beveled than the Escorts but barely noticeable. You can just make them out in the pic.
They were 13" rims so should fit if you come across VW versions.-

You know I just thought I'd come across new ones but I've not looked. Guess everything has fat alloys now, so no demand. I had one of those VW thingys in pale blue in 1986. HWD 575V if memory serves.

It was a great car. A booted version of the Polo. I paid £60 for it! Most reliable car I had until the floor rotted away under the rear seat and the battery fell through above the pedalsmickthefitter wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 10:09 pm You know I just thought I'd come across new ones but I've not looked. If you clean out the hub where the bearings sit from grease, you should see a groove for each cup and I just use a punch and hammer and work on opposites of the cup to tap it out. Just be careful though, as it's easy to just catch the edge of the hub with the punch, slip and slightly gouge it, but some sandpaper normally takes the edge off that if you do . Sounds like you're nearly there now, hope to see it back ok the road soonMorris McKinnon wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 8:09 pm I replaced the front wheel bearings on PTH today. Yes, I did see those notched in the hub but was too scared to go resting a drift on it and hitting it with a hammer incase I did like what you said If they looked burned or scored I would have risked it but they looked ok so hopefully I've made the right choice!
