An article by tuning guru David Vizard in Hot Car magazine provides useful information on this subject. He starts off with a standard 1.8 TC using a rolling road dynamometer:

" Despite being set up to factory spec. it became obvious from the mixture analyser that the fuel/air mixture on this Marina
was far too rich - a relatively common fault on the 1.8 TC engine. Because of the rich mixture involved here a good 10 per
cent of the fuel that is going into the engine at one end is coming out of the exhaust unburnt."

He goes on to fit a pair of weaker needles (CF). These weakened the mixture considerably and improved engine power output by 6 hp.
Next he tries a pair of even weaker needles (AN):

"With the engine set up to the spec. which gave us best results the cars road performance was evaluated. Result: better
acceleration than an MGB, approximately 5 mph on top speed and exactly 10 per cent better fuel consumption."

David then goes into more involved tuning mods to get the best out of the TC, including head mods, different size carbs, different cams etc.

Balmy, you had your car set on a rolling road dyno didn't you?

Yep it was. Now it’s run in it flies, is smooth and returns great mpg.
