Re: Morris Marina Mk1 DoneDeal
Looks like a nice one. G is Galway reg. but plate format is post 1987 I think so car probably imported here from UK - not many cars survived as well as this here as roads would have been poor around Galway in 1975 and mot test only came in in 2000 so cars tended to be neglected and deteriorate. Would automatic have been a factory option on a 1.3 or has someone done a conversion?

Re: Morris Marina Mk1 DoneDeal
145 tyres. Did they ever put 145 tyres on 1.8s? I feel sure that was the size on my Marina 1.8 Mk1 (just posted a picture from 1982). Though they could have been the wrong size fitted cheaply by the selling dealer. In fact, the rears were remould radials and the fronts crossplies when bought. I had Firestone radials fitted all round in the size fitted to the rear...hence 145 SR 13. My 'new' Marina 1.8 HL has 155/70 13 tyres. The steering feels very heavy. I don't think there's a seized trunnion as the steering does return to centre. On my old 1.8, when the trunnion went it wasn't so much heavy, as just needing the steering fed back to centre after every turn. The tyres on my new Marina are old and need replacing soon, but as far as I can see, I'll be fitting the same size. I intend to check the toe-in at the first opportunity.
Re: Morris Marina Mk1 DoneDeal
No 1.8s had 155 tyres as standard, must have been fun having a 1.8 on crossplys
Best way to tell if a trunnion is seized is to disconnect the track rod ends and try turning the front suspension upright from side to side, should be nice and free. That will rule out a rusty steering rack etc.

Re: Morris Marina Mk1 DoneDeal
The rack has been replaced in the recent past, apparently. Another print out for an eBay purchase in the car's history folder. I don't understand why because there are no advisories in the online MoT history, which only dates back to 2012 when it had 24,000 miles on the clock. That's why if its not the tyres, I'm wondering if the geometry is correct, although it doesn't pull. Just very heavy when parking or turning. I thought it was the old 'understeer' and '1800 B Series' thing with Marinas and that my memory was playing up after 30-odd years since my last 1.8 Marina, but Chris Weedon's buyers guide in one of the old 'Understeer' magazines sent to me after I joined the club says the steering should feel light. That certainly isn't true of mine. In the early 90s I used to own a 1.3 Maestro at a time when most cars were going over to power steering, and I used to wonder why as I could virtually turn the wheel on that with one finger! Of course, now tyres are about a foot wide...the track rod ends on my Marina are smothered in grease and fresh looking grease appears on any nipples I can see from looking under the car. I think the last two owners were old, and the last one appears to have been fastidious in his attempts to look after the car, even if it wasn't always successful - like the bodged starter wiring discussed in another of my posts. There are dozens of hand written - and almost unintelligible - notes in the Haynes manual that came with the car - though the guy decided the auto gearbox was a BG Type 35 and its a 65. Chris Weedon actually got that wrong in his article - he says its a Type 35 till 1979/80! But regarding the auto box on my car, the notes refer to having it checked for leaks, having fluid drained out at a local garage because it was overfilled, and they said it was now dry. it isn't, it leaks from the union where the dip stick tube is, and possibly from the sump and maybe selector linkage gasket, and I've had to put half a litre back in to bring it up to the 'hot full' level. So I think the old feller got fobbed off sometimes.
