...I'm most jealous of that uncracked brown dash
I thought you'd like that :-D I'll keep that back for you Josh if you like though there is a small crack by the glovebox.
I have another one lost in the shed somewhere!

Ooo I wouldn't say no!

The later clutch slave does fit but you end up with a very weird feeling clutch. I have driven an early clutch with a later slave and it felt horrible compared to the nice light clutch they should have. Saying that if you have the gearbox out Alex you could always fit the later clutch and the later slave then it's job done. I have some later clutch plates here and there's a few covers on eBay.

I have a stainless steel sleeved reconditioned 1" clutch slave on the shelf if you get stuck.

Ok thanks for that Josh, I may pop over soon to yours and raid your parts bin and also look at all your cars ;). I think I remember buying some seals from Earlpart for PDAs clutch/brakes so I'll do that, guess the NOS ones being rubber break down after all the years.

Saying about the clutch Josh, I've pulled off the later clutch off of VGV (which makes me question if its the original engine). Should I have the smaller clutch on VGV as I've got one, but if I did this, would I have to change the flywheel? Or if I fit an early clutch I can keep the flywheel I have? Also, would it make it better to drive with the later clutch compared to me wanting to make it original and what would you do?

Thanks for that Chris, I'll keep it in mind should I go back to original .

Thanks all,

Alex

Personally I'd put the smaller type in, I find them much lighter and nicer to drive. I guess being smaller they burned out easier, can't see why else BL changed it unless it was to standardise. If you're planning on doing loads of miles in it though I'd put the later clutch and slave in.

Is the brown dash any good mate, to replace the one I had painted incorrectly, also matching steering wheel and clock surround?

I believe that the original 6" clutch was replaced to try and overcome clutch judder. I was taught to drive in an early 1.3 Coupe with the British School of Motoring and the clutch judder was horrible.

I have only ever experienced judder with the 8 inch clutches. I have always found the early ones to be far smoother.

I'm glad someone brought that up. I remember when I owned VBX (a deluxe coupe) and reading about why the clutch was changed to an 8".
Knowing VBX had an 8" clutch I remember thinking "well, it did f**k all to stop judder but at least they tried!" REP was the same and it wasn't until I got PTH on the road I got very confused! From earlier magazine readings I was expecting severe clutch judder but like Josh said, the 6" clutch is as smooth as you like! TDT will give judder if you don't hold it at a particular 'sweet spot' but PTH won't give judder wherever the pedal is!

Maybe being a BSM car the tiny clutch got burnt out quickly from all the learners so they changed it for the beefier one

There are many factors to clutch judder, and most are not related to the actual clutch alone.

Excessive backlash in the drivetrain from worn propshaft universals, tired engine mounts, or too much clearance between crown wheel and pinion can all cause this.

Oil contamination is also a favourite, but some judicious 'burning' of the friction plate by slipping the clutch while stationary may provide a short term remedy.

Stinks a bit though.. ;)

I'll go with the slipping clutch story, you only gave to listen to a learner these days to hear the amount of revs used.

Oil contamination does seem to do a good job of stopping them seizing on though...

I'd guess that the change was made for longevity.

Worn engine/gearbox mountings, worn spigot bearing, missing bell housing alignment dowels, as well as normal worn components, clutch lining material ands oil contamination are all prime suspects for clutch judder.
