Marina Racks

Post by duncanmark » Fri Sep 01, 2023 6:05 am

Hi

I have a Marina steering rack in my Marlin Kit Car

As far as I can make out I am supposed to use a heavy oil in my rack -
I was sure that we used to use grease in our steering racks back when I played with minis

Any thoughts?
Stick to the oil or change to grease?

On the racks that I have opened up over the years, those that have had grease in them have tended to choke up as the grease hardens, becoming stiffer. Those with oil (as long as it has been topped from time to time) have been fine. The factory manuals all recommend 90W oil (same as for the gearbox and rear axle - 200cc.

It can become a test of whether you have tightened the steering boots down tight enough to avoid leaks.

In my mini years ago it had a very liquid grease which flowed so not a heavy type. Marina has same as gearbox / back axle as Chris states.
