Once again the time for a new battery has arrived. Been doing the usual checking wth local supplies. I have always used a major brand name and want to do so again. Gave the RAC a call because their online Reg checker shows nothing for my Marina. They prescribed the EXIDE EXCELL EB451, which interests me because I got almost NINE years out of my current EXIDE, however this product code is unfamiliar, usually TYPE038. Anyone know anything about this battery?

Go for a type 015 more cranking power than the 038, it's listed as the optional high power battery for the Marina/Ital according to my period Lucas catalogue.

Thanks Chris for the response. You have bypassed my original question 'anyone know anything about this battery?'. It is possible that the EXIDE EXCELL EB451 is a type 015 in disguise.

The next battery will be the fifth I have purchased for this vehicle. Previous four have been two type 015 and two type 038 HEAVY DUTY. I have not observed any difference in performance between the two types and the type 038s lasted longer.

I may avoid this battery and purchase an item which is clearly marked type 015 or 038.

My advice would be to buy a black Varta battery. Got Varta on both bikes and the TC and are excellent. Can't think what the code is on the TC one as it's a slightly bigger size than a 015 but gives better cranking power.

Hi no the EB451 is a different shape, taller and not as long. The battery terminals are the same though. If you are looking at EBay search that I listed it will have my thing with the word battery and the digits 015 in the title.



Taking David's point about Varta batteries, I have always found them the best too.

B24 rings a bell and it's the black type so think that's the one I have.

I've a Halfords own brand (bought with a trade card) 038 on Mud & it's been brilliant- i.e. I left the car outside for about 5 months over winter without even disconnecting the battery & it started the car on a cold Februrary day, after a quick spin round the block and half hour ticking over it then got left for another couple of months and again started the car. It's a few years old as well now. Sufficiently impressed to buy another for the Mk2.

Ian, look out for the difference in height with this EB341 .
Chris said its 25mm taller, I just bought a nice Yuasa ybx5057 48ah battery , saw it at Halfords, but got a much better deal on line.
Exactly the same , its 25mm taller, the battery pos cable would barely stretch to fit the lug on, & gives no slack for engine movement, Ive made a new longer pos lead up to be safe.
I like the battery, but it was something I missed when checking it out.

I used a pair of quick release battery clamps on my Coupe. Each time I put her in the garage I remove the clamps to isolate the battery. The pictures the negative earth without its blue cover.

However, just been looking at the link to the VARTA site and note that the Marina recommended batteries are all higher than the Type 015/038 and the Black VARTA B24 has the same dimensions (shorter) as the EXIDE EB451. In view of the comments regarding additional height I raised my battery 25mm using a wooden block to check on cables, whilst they fit it is not ideal.

Couple of quotes I received were for a PLATINUM battery one being KWIK FIT £82.00!!!. Looking at the PLATINUM website I see that this company sells/markets/distributes several other brands including TUNGSTONE. Bought one of these back in 1987, was HAWKER SIDDELEY TUNGSTONE then, lasted 8.3 years. All the brands on this website are the correct size, although a diagram indicates positive on right but sellers state positive on left.

David , I only mentioned the Battery height causing me a problem because it was something I missed.
when looking for a replacement battery.
In my case I've got a pre-engaged starter on the auto, with the battery cable going directly to the solenoid on the starter.
That extra 25mm height meant the battery was under tension & once the battery clamp was fitted, any engine movement, would've tried to pull the pos post off. Thats even removing the cable guide.

For cars with an inertia starters, with the solenoid on the inner wing it might be perfectly ok.
I'd got spare battery cable & lugs so made a new one with some "wiggle room" so its now ok.
Just tried to save someone else making the same mistake.
