Ebay bidding

Post by Clan Chieftain » Wed Feb 13, 2008 8:16 pm

8) If you wanted an item on ebay and you knew someone else wanted it, would you bid against them.
sorry folks but if i wanted an item then i would bid........would you ??
After all it is an auction but to me sniping makes it a farce and unfair.

As I have always said Larry, eBay is an external auction site - the rule of such is that the highest bidder wins. Supply and demand on items for cars that are no longer in production or are rare will dictate prices. Small groups such as Marina owners, or others after items in limited numbers, will inevitably find themselves after an item that someone they know is also after.

One may argue that common courtesy dictates that you ask or alert the bidder than you are also interested in said item.

However on the other side of that coin is the fact that eBay can be anonymous and as such you will never know if you are indeed bidding against an acquaintance.

Individual discretion is a factor as to whether you will alert other bidders to your intention to bid, however one should also take into consideration personal feelings towards opposing bidders. I am sure people are somewhat less likely to bid on items wanted by "friends" especially if they have had trade dealings in the past.

They always say you should never mix business with pleasure and from the same vein maybe people should accept that on sites such as eBay occasionally one must be selfish in order to further projects and it is not a deliberate attack or action filled with malice, simply the economics of supply and demand.

Explains why I always lose then as I am brassic

Sometimes I bid early if I know i am not going to be around when it ends. I have a tendancy of forgetting when things are ending! Which is probably good as I can't afford a lot of stuff that I want!

It depends.....

If they asked you as a friend....then No...

If they told you not to bid and you did not like them....Then yes...

I am sure this is leading somewhere... :D

I think for what it`s worth Larry, that if a friend asked you not to bid on something and you know he needed it more than you did, it would be a bit mean to bid on it anyway, but if you both need it for your rebuild or whatever..then you need to agree to let things run their course and "may the best man win" would come into play, you need to be adult about it and not take offence...after all it is an auction site and that is what is supposed to happen in an auction...it works both ways...the seller could lose out too if the only competition for his item turned out to be two friends he would only get one low bid and make bu**er all on his item!
So basically everyone needs to be grown up about it and try not to fall out over such things, after all there is usually another item in the pipeline eventually...or just ask someone on the forum if you need something bad enough one of us will help you as i have done on several occasions, as has Larry, Ben, Ray, Trev, Jim, Matt....and so on  .Frank.
