Water ingress through air vents under wipers?

Post by mikmik » Sat Dec 05, 2009 9:11 pm

Is it possible that water could be getting in when I wash the car through the air vent between the wipers and the bonnet?

I had the windscreen resealed, and it seemed fine, but I washed the car and the front was soaked again in the footwells!

Ideas please lads? Can you put something in to divert the rain toward the engine and away from the cabin maybe?

Hi Mick, Yep, a favourite place for water to get in is either around the wipers or washers. It can get in around the heater but any of mine mostly leaked around the wipers or washers. The only way to tell for sure is to install yourself upside down in the footwell so you can see whats happening while you get a willing helper to spray the car with water... Good luck matey.

It may be stating the obvious but are your heater drains blocked?

They're the ones under the bonnet I think. Could be the cause of my leak through the vent. I did clear some crap out but no doubt there's more in there!

They're the two plastic elbows on the bulkhead just either side of the engine block. Pic shamelessly borrowed from Paul's Jubilee thread...

Yeah thats all I did to solve water on the floor of my van. It's a MK3 and the drains are made of rubber with a flap on the front, makes an excellent trap for all sorts of gunk, so they get blocked now and then.

There was a little crud in the driver's side one, but I poked as far back as I could with a piece of plastic and they seemed ok to me.

Should I remove the little grill and try clean them from the top too?

No joy on this lads.

So far I've checked all the door drains, resealed the screen and cleaned the heater drains ( well, the lower half of them anyway).

Any other ideas for me please? rack your brains, i wanna put me carpets back in!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mick
