Darren, since Leyland Australia basically just stroked the Rover V8 from 3.5 to 4.4 for the P76 (with a taller block deck height), did they carry over the Rover P6 water pump or did they beef it up to cope with the Aussie heat?locost_bryan wrote:How long is the P76 pump?

Was the Rover gearbox related in any way to the MGB V8 box? Wonder if it ever had a Laycock overdrive?beniboyz wrote:V8 Pickup underside (P6 Manual Gearbox..):
Do we know what the gearbox mount was from, and if it fitted in the Marina tunnel without any mods?

Re: Installing V8 in pick up
Yes the P76 water pump is much longer, like most aussies.
I am lead to believe that V6 buick timing cover & water pump combos can be used aswell,
you would have to do some research but you might find a combination that is shorter again
than tha P6 non-viscous type.
The P76 pump is different,I will send a pic
Cheers

Installing V8 in pick up
There's an article about Rover/Buick parts interchangeability in an old Practical Performance Car magazine, I'll try and find it and scan it in.
The Buick V6 is a cut down Buick/Rover V8. They started as aluminium and later ones are iron.

This is the Foden V8 Marina in it's last years. You can see the P6 derived viscous fan clearly:

Re: Installing V8 in pick up
I will find the article for you and upload. I think it was a P6 Manual box not an MG one on the Pickup. The MG had an integral bellhousing did it not?locost_bryan wrote:Was the Rover gearbox related in any way to the MGB V8 box? I did find this article on aronline:

Re: Installing V8 in pick up
So, if you want to fit a Rover V8 and use a "standard" factory gearbox, it looks like you get a few options...
Rover P6 4-speed (3500S)
MGB V8 4-speed (with optional overdrive)
SD1/TR8 LT77 5-speed (based on the old Jaguar 4-speed, if Land Rover sites are to be believed)
Land Rover R380 5-speed (94> Range Rover/Morgan/TVR)
Note from a MGB V8 website "The MGB overdrive gearbox is adequate for the power of the stock Buick 215 motor. Few people realize that the factory MGB V8 gearbox was essentially the same unit as used in the 4 cylinder models. The ratios were different, but the V8-spec transmission was no "stronger"."

I read all they used was an "adaptor" plate to mate the MGB box up to the V8. Something that could be easily fabricated if Simon wanted to used his existing box. (he has an MGB o/d already fitted iirc).
You could use the auto box from the P6, It's a BW65 - the same as fitted to the Marina's but with a different tail shaft and beefier internals.

Re: Installing V8 in pick up
i used to drive a Hyster 10t forklift that had a GM V6 in all in iron and it had a HUGE appetite for LPG
kept getting really hot and in the end when warm it would spin over but not start you had to tow it,
got refitted with a Perkins diesel
