Gearbox bearing

Post by Kilroy » Sat Nov 16, 2013 6:38 am

Howdy all.

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a new first motion shaft bearing for the 1800 gearbox.?
#104433
This is the very front bearing and it has a circlip groove around the outside.
I have stripped a gearbox which I thought had a noisy layshaft bearing - but the only bearing that seems bad is the front one.

I have seen a bearing kit sold by "Autogear" on eBay - but it is quite expensive having all the bearings,
layshaft and some other bits. All I need is the bearing.

I hope...

Cheers.

Not talking to myself - there's just an echo in here...
:)

Great Scott Scott.!
Assume that you are happily driving about in your estate then.?
Hope to be doing the same as soon as my screen goes in.
Actually - I should be doing it myself - but will watch carefully for any cool tricks then do any others myself.

Are you interested in attending any Morris related events.?

Cheers.

Kilroy

If you have a Triumph supplier in NZ ask for a Triumph Spitfire 1500 or 4 speed TR7 bearing, it's the same bearing.

It will be the bush on the left side of the rack.

I have a new bush here if you want...

I do overhaul them if you get stuck.

Cheers.

I was told that I need to remove the gearbox to get at the bush/rack
Is this right?

Absolutely not.

The steering rack can be removed from under the right mudguard after releasing the tie rods from the rod ends, removing the steering column and releasing the two u bolts that hold it to the firewall.

If you can drop the car here for a day I will do the job for you for bugger all... (technical term..)

Hopefully the gaiters are up for another tour of duty.

The only Truimph dealers we have are those selling motorbikes.

Actually - there are some Triumph parts stockists, and I use them a fair bit.

By the way - I have a spare window winder handle or two if you still need...

Cheers mate.

Hmmm.

Actually.

Before I dig a deeper hole - can anyone conform that the Mk1 steering rack uses the same bush as the later versions.?

Thanks.

Yes Kilroy. The early ones are a white nylon-y substance, the later ones are black and seem to be slightly harder wearing. They are all the same dimensions though.

Kilroy

I have cross referenced the Triumph part number into manufacturers bearing part numbers.

OE Triumph 104430 relates to

MJ1NR Imperial Open Snap Ring Type Open Deep Groove Ball Bearing 1x2-1/2x3/4 inch

Inside Diameter: 25.4mm = 1 inch

Outside Diameter: 63.5mm = 2-1/2 inch

Width: 19.05mm = 3/4 inch

Seals / Shields: None

Clearance: * Standard

Also Known As: RMS8NR

Image

Also used in
Classic Cars & Motor cycles
Garden Machines
Agricultural and Automotive
Electric motors / Industry
Pumps

This link give dimensions etc. SimplyBearings

I reckon there's a good chance that an NZ bearing supplier will have one on the shelf.
