I expect estates were built in batches?

If 17741 was built in the first week of Jan 74 then Mud would have been built in the last week of December 1973, that's assuming continuous estate production rather than batch production, it may have been built in a batch anytime in late 1973.

What date is your wiper motor? That usually gives a pretty good indication of when the car was built. There will be a bottom row of numbers on it (for example my DL is 51 71 so my wiper motor was made in the 51st week of 1971 and the car was built in the 1st week of 1972- I can say that as we know the last chassis number in 1971). You can also look at the date code on the glass. I don't think glass would have been stored in big quantities for long because of it's fragile nature although it can only be divided into quarters date-wise http://www.mgexp.com/article/triplex-wi ... -code.html

Most cars I have looked at the chassis numbers of seem to have sat for a while before being registered. My DL wasn't registered until May 72, Mossy was built in February/March 72 but not registered until August. My J reg didn't sit for long and went on the road almost fresh off the line. I have one car on the 71 register that has the early wiper pattern but not registered until July 72! TCs and of course Mumfords waited even longer than the regular cars to hit the road. There will be some N and P reg Mumfords that will be tax free now according to Gary Dunster's Mumford register.

I was wondering how long they stood about for. I must get the chassis number corrected on the mumford V5 as it reads MH2891406213M,two errors,I blame the bad hand writing and smoke filled offices back in the 1970's.

How was the build date allocated? Was it the date it came off the end of the assembly line? Having read the latest BMC/BL history articles on AROnline, it sounds like there were many strikes (at BL or parts suppliers) that resulted in cars being partially assembled and stored in the fields around the plant, and then finished off when the strike was over. So maybe there was a gap between the initial build date, the final finishing off, and then actually getting delivered to the dealer, sold and finally registered?

I have no idea Bryan. I have always aasumed that they rivetted the chassis plate on at the end of the line. Can anyone help?

Goods news if you have a 73 car!!

Post by MarinaCoupe » Wed Mar 19, 2014 2:57 pm

Yup from 01/04/2014 the cut off is 31/12/1973 and from 01/04/2015 it becomes a rolling exemption bringing in new cars each year. Every 01/04 Historic Status will advance one year to the next 31/12 applicable.

To reassure everyone, I already have all the chassis numbers for the first vehicle manufactured every year up to the last Ital in 1984.

Just validating an August 1974 registered 1.8 Coupe DL, as built in 1973 with a chassis number more than 60,000 under the last car made!

I reckon that it sat around for the best part of a year before being registered on the road.

Harvest Gold too!
