Hi Chris
The chassis plate number will be fixed at the same time as the body number,
which is etched/stamped on the scuttle [on my Ital] don't know if its in the same place on the marina.
It was done quite early on i think while it was still a body shell.

I know its a different animal but at L.D.V. it was done at the begining of the build, as soon as it arrived from the paint shop. i assume it would be the same.

Hi Gil,

On the Marinas there is a stamped plate with the body number which is spot welded onto the nearside of the slam panel and painted over with the rest of the car. The Marina then has the chassis number riveted to the offside of the slam panel.

My Ital Pickup has the chassis number stamped on the offside inner wing in the engine bay, behind the battery, like your Ital saloon.

Anorak time - "did you know?" that the last 1.8 DL Coupe was manufactured in August 1973. Obviously a slow seller.

Very few 1.8 DLs were ever made which is why they are so rare now. I know of two 1.8 DL Coupes and one 1.8 DL Saloon. Even period pictures of them are uncommon, only have 8 1.8 DL saloons in my picture library compared to 64 1.8 SDL saloons and 49 TC saloons.
Got pictures of 8 1.8 DL coupes, 27 1.8 SDL coupes and 40 TC coupes.

Hi Chris,

So the body number was put on before painting, [earlier than i thought] & the chassis no
plate must have gone on later, my mistake, but back to Bryans question, even if a car was partly built then taken off the line for shortages, it would have already have its body no
[is that the same as the vin no ?] so wouldn't the build date be when it went on the track?
rather than at the end ? what do you recon ?.

Gil. :-? :-?

Hi Gil

Good point, it would have to be the beginning wouldn't it as the chassis number/Vin plate dictates the engine and trim level.

The DVLA have simplified the process for claiming Historic Vehicle (tax free) status. Josh will be posting shortly on the club website. The key change is that if the car was registered 1973 then you will be able to do it all at the Post Office using the V5C section 7 without using a V10.

Cars manufactured in 1973 and registered in 1974 still need a Club letter for the DVLA, but certified copies of MOT and Insurance are no longer needed.

Fantastic- does that mean it doesn't have to currently be taxed to change it? I was going to have to tax Mud (has been off the road for 6 months) to get the taxation class changed to get free tax

No need to be taxed, but must have current MOT and Insurance. You'll get the new tax disk from the Post Office.

Of course- but it means I can MOT her, then sort out my nice free tax disc- my interpretation of the rules previously was that I'd have to buy a disc as normal (once re MOT'd) and then sort out the exemption, surrender the bought tax disc and "buy" a free one! This sounds rather simpler (and cheaper ).

I suspect it might be because the DVLA had a rather large pile of post on the doormat when they got in yesterday morning
