final drives

Post by MarinaCoupe » Tue Sep 02, 2014 9:47 pm

Ah, I get it. The more I look the more that I think that we are chasing a ghost, perhaps the Ital was 3.89:1 and I've been wrong all along.

Out of interest early and late MGB axles were 3.9:1, with options on 3.7, 3.3, 3.07.

Hi chris I thought the ital saloon and estate used a 3.89 diff and the ital van carried on using the 4.1
ive got an official letter in my morris ital press pack which says about the ital modifications over the marina range for better fuel consumption
im sure it mentions the following
3.89 diff
88 thermostat
twin down pipe manifold
viscous fan
ill have did it out and check
best regards

Thanks Barry, there you go then, no 3.93:1.

The only BL car with a 3.93ish diff was the Allegro 1300, with a 3.938 (63/16), although there is an aftermarket 3.929 (55/14) for the Mini.

All the small Triumph diffs had far fewer teeth on the crownwheel (between 35 and 41) and pinion (9 or 11) :-
3.273 36/11 (ital 2.0 auto)
3.636 40/11
3.889 35/9 (Ital 1300)
4.111 37/9
4.556 41/9

The 575 van/pickup could take the 3.909 43/11 from an early MGB or Midget, or even a 39/11 3.545 from a Wolseley 6 auto (according to this BMC banjo axle chart).
