Now belongs to the insurance company, but I still hope that they catch the bastards. This is what puts up all our insurance premiums.

Trust me some thieves are very thick. House next door to my Mum got broken in to a few weeks back in the early hours of the morning. when the occupants woke and decided some thing was wrong and went down to investigate all the lights were on and no sign of the thieves. The Police were fast to turn up (Very Rural Location) and the thieves picked the one night it had snowed and they were on foot so there were foot prints. these lead directly to the front door of the criminal who was just kicking off his shoes with a 42 inch TV under his arm. This is was followed by - YOUR NICKED SON!
TV was back with the owner by the end of the day

So they picked the only night it snowed to do the job, were on foot and only lived a mile away - Stupid indeed. Glad they got caught as the people were elderly and it could have ended much worse for them.

Is any one going to tell him it is nicked or do you think that would see it straight off to the nearest crusher? He sounds genuine enough but has it been missing for a couple of years already and has it moved very far. Looks like it still has steering lock and keys too.

I've just done a dvla check and it's still listed,with no tax or mot. So whoever buys it should in theory be able to apply for the v5 using the original reg number!
Correct me anyone if wrong please

I'll be dammed.. it is it too If it was my car that got nicked I'd be asking all sorts of questions like who sold it to him and who had it before them!
Looks like they took what they wanted and chucked the rest. Two things in life I can't stand and that's thieves and liars The fu**ing cheek of it

The Sensible thing to do would be to run a HPI check. As the first thing an unsuspecting buyer would know is when applying for V5c is Police turning up at reclaim the stolen property. You have no way of stopping them, the person who sold it to you does not have good title to it. Its still in effect belongs to the person it was stolen from, or the Insurance company that paid out on it. You would have to take private legal action against the vendor to try to reclaim your money. I know two people this has happened one was a XR2 he never saw the car or his money again. The other was with an MG Metro that had been stolen from the factory brand new, he was lucky in he was able to negociate with the insurance company and keep the car. I purchased an Orion Ghia out of an auction with a fake V5 luckly I had paid an indemnity fee at the sale so got my money back from the Auction. When purchasing a car now even an old one off ebay, I will not part with a penny piece until I have fully checked it out, HPI, V5C, including the Water mark and reference number, full DVLA / VOSA MOT history and of course the cars VIN number both on the body, plate and visible VIN are present and un tampered with and finally the car matches the Vendors description despite any demands in the advert. Remember the Vendor is not in the driving seat and you are the customer any genuine Vendor with understand. The Golden rule is if any dout whatsoever is to walk away and never meet them half way, ie motorway service station no matter how tempting. But if things go wrong you need to know where they live that includes buying it of the drive way and not going in the house!!!

Think you should play dumb and get the police involved,if the seller gets a wiff its nicked then he could panic and get it crushed/disposed of. By the sounds of it the seller does not know its stollen but theres a chance he will not to want to get involved if you take him on yourself.......

That's my point exactly it will all show up in a HPI Check if its stolen and any there is police interest in the vehicle or if it has been discharged from its liability. Are the VIN tags still on the car HPI can be carried out on VIN tag if VIN is missing and no paper work more than likely dodgey if you buy it under those conditions you must have alternative VIN tag available so its your concence alone

If you Zoom picture you will see VIN tag has been removed no Number Plates No V5 DODGEY !!!!!!!! to say the least would walk away very fast if it was me you are buying trouble in my opinion

That's why I was trying to trace the owner instead of going straight to the rozzers. It is a bit odd- I suspect the chap selling it bought it in good faith but it's definitely had an unpleasant recentish history. I was actually contemplating it myself had it turned out to be a "stolen recovered", either to stash away or for spares, but I don't think I will be somehow.

The seller told me (via PM) that he's been in touch with the police and it's not recorded as stolen. Would be interesting to see an HPI report for it...

is it the orange est that was on gumtree with wide wheels or the grey one stripped? seen the grey one a while back on ebay
