Hi,

I thought I'd just post a quick introduction as I've newly signed up. I'm helping my Grandpa restore a Marina that he bought recently. I don't really know anything about Marinas, but I have worked on a few cars. It was a bit rough when he got it, I changed the spark plugs and bled the brakes and it goes surprisingly well.

The car is a four cylinder Coupe, but has a 'Super' badge on the side, which I thought meant it should be a six cylinder. I'm finding it difficult to find reliable information on the internet! Would somebody be able to point me in the right direction for information? I'm currently trying to figure out the part number for the steering rack as it needs replacing.

The chassis number is YH2S7610 (or possibly YH257610). Can I decode this to figure out the car's original specs?

Sorry if I've missed anything obvious and thanks in advance for any help!

I have a '72 TC. The six didn't come out until late '73, when they changed from Morris to Leyland badging. Check out ozmarina.com for more info. Also ebay has factory workshop manuals listed, these have lots of details about the specs. Enjoy your restoration. Search this forum, one of the Aussie members posted the chassis codes meanings a few years back.

Hi Ben welcome. It looks like one of the early 1.8 B series engines cars, imported from the U.K. as knock down kits. When Leyland Australia starting local production in 1973, they switched the standard engine to the 1750 E Series OHC engine and the Red 6 got the 6 cylinder 2600 E series engine.

BTW what's wrong with the steering rack?

The Australian chassis codes were detailed in this thread.

Y = Australia
H = Marina
S or 2S = 4 door (followed by 2-digit trim code) or 2 door (followed by 1-digit trim code)
S15 = 1500 Deluxe
S17 = 1750 Deluxe
S18 = 1500 Super
S19 = 1750 Super
S20 = 1750 auto
2S2 = 1750 Coupe Deluxe
2S3 = 1750 Coupe Super
2S4 = 1750 Coupe TC

Based on that, the chassis code for your Super Coupe should begin YH2S3

Ah great. Thanks very much for the information. OzMarina is quite helpful. I don't have the car at my place, I'll have to double check that chassis number, it seems a bit strange based on that info.

I haven't inspected the steering rack closely, but I could feel a clunking from near the boot when moving the left wheel by hand. The local mechanic reckons the steering rack casing is cracked.

Also I should apologise for not searching properly before posting! Basic forum practice!

There is a bush in the left hand end that breaks down over time and gives exactly the symptoms that you describe. There is a replacement Nolathane bush made in Aus to replace it, go to your local Nolathane supplier and order part number 41044.

It's very unlikely that the rack housing has cracked, although I can understand why your mechanic might think so.

If you search on this forum, you will find instructions on how to fit it, without removing the steering rack from the car.
