What did you do to your Marina today?

Took BOP for her first decent drive today- 120 mile round trip to deepest Norfolk. A series purred away. When we got back I treated her to a rebuilt original washer motor and correct speaker cover. Still can't believe this is the same car I dragged out of a garage after it had been off the road since 1981!




Found a decent original clutch master on a spare pedal box so have ordered a rebuilt kit for that. Sadly the glovebox lock is no longer latching and the only other glovebox lid I have is a later MK1 one, but I don't have a spare later catch to use. Must have been a common issue for BL to change the lock and the catch.

I think Triumph TR7 and Jaguar XJ6 have the same glovebox latch, though I don't know about early cars. I never knew they differed!

Found a spare from a later car to go with my later lid so all sorted now!

Yeah early ones have a straight baseplate, later ones are a different shape and I think the 'U' bit is at a different angle too!

Few more jobs done on the MK2 last night- fuel tank in, fuel hoses replaced, new spark plugs, dizzy cap and electronic ignition.

Car passed its MOT yesterday, despite the hazards failing so i will be checking the circuit this weekend.
Strange as they were working fine, my son probably wore out the switch as he is always turning them on!
MOT guy said the car did not need them fitted for the year but as they were fitted they should work. He knows me well so knows i will be fixing it asap. I hate things not working.
Just looked through my spares and found the original switch which was removed plus 2 new ones and flasher units so i will pop down to where the car is and have a look tomorrow. Car currently stored away from home while building works are being completed.

I had the same issue so I just popped a bit of insulation tape over the switch so the warning triangle is covered up. Hey presto no more hazards

My feeling on hazard warning lights as an MOT tester, is that if fitted to an older vehicle than the compulsory testing date. Which from memory is 1986 they are not a testable item. Nowhere it the testing manual does it say things are to be applied retrospectively. If anyone wants to know the exact date and wording in the manual I can look it up when back at work on Tuesday.

Well I checked out the hazards and sure enough switch was not working.
It was odd as the switch was new and looked fine until closer examination


Terminal second down on the left (Terminal no. 3) is melted.

When I took switch out I noticed possibly this terminal was not fully on or was possible off and intermittent.
This may have caused over heating due to high resistance but not sure.
also my hazard relay is a 9FL Lucas which has enough guts to also flash trailer lamps as well as the 6 lamps on the car so pretty sure this is OK and correct type. 8FL is for the normal indicators.
Strange thing is when I checked my spare 9FL Lucas relay switched it just left all the hazards on! So my old trusted can works well!
I check power was OK at the relay on the brown and all OK so I knew power was OK and fuses. Just as well as that would require removing my under dash speaker to get to the fuses which may not have been the best idea but so far not had any issues.
If the switch goes again then I will look further in to why but may be just bad luck on that terminal.

Did you strip the interior of the switch?

Yes I did Chris.
It showed a small amount of plastic melting similar to the outside. everything else looked perfect and new.

Lucas hazard switches do seem pretty fragile, I've had to replace them on my Mk2 and the Land Rover.

Still think it was caused by high resistance from wire to terminal as it was loose and nearly off the terminal.
Be good to find anyone else witha hazard switch with a melted terminal to see f it is a method of failure.

I've a box of old Marina switches in various states. Some working, some in bits. I'll see what's there. I have just the backs too as I repaired my headlight switch with a two way blower switch and had to swap the toggle part as it had the wrong symbol on it.
