But of course.
One would need to skim the block instead.
Not sure how much gap there is between the piston crown and the top of the bore at TDC. though...

In Theory it should be the thickness of the gasket. When tuning the old Pintos used to over bore and deck block the machine a relief in edge of piston crown to allow piston to use head gasket thickness

Hi all
A further question and an admin query for you.
were the o series ever adapted for unleaded or will have have to use an additive in the fuel?
I have tried to reply to a couple of private messages off the back of this thread, but my responses get held in my outbox. I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong but any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Mike

The O series is an aluminium head and is already designed to use unleaded from the start.

No worries.
If they are still in the outbox, that usually means the recipient hasn't read the message.

Hi there
Still struggling with seized 1.7 o series. Does anyone know of one lying around on a garage floor somewhere in need of a home?
Many thanks

I have spare 1700 lying around although dont know how good it is, dont think it's seized. Will have to check.
Im currently rebuilding a 2000 O series engine to back in my marina. But I will be keeping the original 1700 that came out, see the thread about Gold mk3

Hi all
I have sourced a replacement unused factory spare 1/2 engine. The replacement block does not have a built in dipstick. Instead it has a hole that looks as though it would receive some form of plug in dipstick. photos of existing (showing dipstick on my existing block and replacement attached. Any suggestions as to how to resolve this? One thought i had was to take measurements and have a plug in built, but clearly a plug and play solution would be preferred. any suggestions / words of advice greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

There look to be quite a few differences between those blocks. I wonder if the new one is a later Montego/Maestro "O2" block, is there an engine number stamped on the block?

If you can send more pictures it would help to identify the block. From what I can see it looks to be an O2 engine. These come with a number of differences:
Bottom face of the block is mirrored meaning you will need to use a FWD sump, or find a Discovery MPi one.
The cylinder heads are different, mostly the oil feed. Check with a head gasket and see what lines up.
These will run in RWD as well as FWD configuration. Nothing too demanding here and you can use your old flywheel, clutch etc. You may need a new spigot bush for the crank.
The dipstick just needs a plug machining to fit. Then you can use your stick, however you need to figure out what sump to use first.

Thank you for the very helpful feedback. See photos showing engine number. Any suggestions on sourcing a FWD or discovery MPi sump? Good news that if i can sort that then should be able to make progress. There is a small precision engineering workshop in town that should be able to make the sump plug in
