The sheer number of contacts within the switch mean that usually after operating it, weird symptoms are experienced when trying to use normal indicator functions.
Operating the hazard light switch a number of times will eventually restore normal transmission...
Is the hazard switch the same/similar as the MK4 Mini ones? I recall having similar issues and ended up stripping and cleaning the contacts in the switch to fix it once and for all, otherwise as you say, a lot of operating the switch would get it going for a bit.
