 I'm not really to bothered. On the subject of roofs I would rather like a full length sunroof but I'm expecting they are rather pricey so that would have to wait a while....
Even my girlfriend is starting to like this car! Although she hasnt seen it in the flesh so she hasnt seen all the filler and faded paint
Still it's better than what she wants, she wants a bloody Beetle...

Hi Josh,

As you have probably realised from some of the comments, in some quarters you need to get your hands greasy to be considered a 'real' Marinaist. As it happens I have a box of four dozen skinned knuckles here that you can have for gratis and a spare eyeful of rust for those more suicidal moments.

The serious point is that as you work on your car, you will gain an intimate knowledge of all her foibles, over time you will build your confidence in the car and your confidence in your own abilities in fixing her should she go wrong when you are out and about. There is nothing more gratifying than nursing an ailing car all the way home against all the odds - driver 1, gods Nil.

Have a go at doing the clutch yourself before you go to the garage with her, it'll save you some money if you can do it and if not - well it was on their list anyway.

As someone with a love of British bikes and all kinds of machinery I'm more than happy to get my hands dirty and learn about the car and get to know her inside out!
Forme part of the fun of owning a classic vehicle is working on it and tinkering with it every now and then to get it to run just that little bit better...
It's for that reason you will hopefully never see me on a japanese motorbike or behind the wheel of a modern car!
However with regards to the slave cylinder it's my dad who has suggested it goes into the local classics garage for it to be done and although I have said I want to have a go he reckons it should still go there to have it done.
She's also going to have the underside welded at the garage and the chap who runs the garage will show me what else he reckons she will need doing to start off with (he did his apprenticeship on BL cars and he mainly restores BL stuff) and then I plan to do all the work and find more faults as I go along

Thanks! Let's hope someone is coming from the IOW and going through Suffolk! If not it will have to wait until a show where I will be able to meet with some people from down your way.

Congratulations on getting a solid car you like with history....I know a bit about losing history, my parents ´lost´ (ie my Mum threw out) the history to our family Marina when they divorced, and after 33 years next month i still have the car and tax disks but thats all! As to sunroofs, sacrelige with a Marina - what with the heat cooking my skull and the wind blowing my hair I hate sunroofs, especially if they leak in the rain as they do on the wife´s Peugoet 205, i cant think of anything good to say about sunroofs

Good point about sunroofs actually... Ah well, more money to spend on the engine :)
Thanks Chris, I'll ask him when I'm next over there (to pick the car up)
