Couldn't still be frozen could it? Quite mild over here right now, In the daytime anyway.

It could be the fact that the coolant was low and I left it idling at the mechanic when I returned his tools to him, then went to the post office and she never got a chance to cool down when i topped her up

I'll go for a spin round the block tomorrow and see what the story is.

that could be bad news mick if you topped up a hot engine with cold coolant, it can cause the head to crack......

It didn't actually get into the red and overheat Stu, I caught it before it got anywhere near there ( I hope), and I just used water to top it up.

Turns out this core plug had popped out:

I'll get a new one today hopefully

OH! Lucky it was that one and not the back core plug!
Makes you question if the others are a bit loose or corroded :?:

I know when I had my engine in bits the rear most core plug nearly fell out! Car had been sitting with old coolant in for a few years. Ended up replacing all of them.

To be fair I think it was just a temperature thing - it got to minus 10 degrees here over Christmas and thats what a core plug is supposed to do

Poor old Stu must rue the day he sold her to me - every week its something else!

Don't you have any anti-freeze in the coolant? A core plug i s not supposed to pop out at -10.

The coolant was the correct mix, and is supposed to be rated for sub zero temperatures, so I don't know why it happened, but it did.

The plug looks ok, but I'll put a new one in, I just have to see if the motor factors have them, or whether I'll need to hit eBay.

if it was the correct mix- usually 50-50, it should be ok for at least - 40...
