They did try, from memory, to have it all deleted. But it wasn't. The compromise was that the organisers allowed anyone who made it to Temanrasset to rejoin the event - with the proviso that none of them could finish ahead of anyone who did the loop to Kano... in other words anyone who got through the mess after In Salah and kept to the full route after Temanrasset.Originally posted by bigcarlethe front strut broke and pierced the spring tower and then jammed against the exhaust manifold which was fixed at the next service. a lot of cars came to grief in the Sahara run, that section was later deemed a non event [/b]At In Salah, after the first two stages, they were running first on the road with a lead of 2 1/2 hours. Then it all went a bit pear-shaped with front suspension problems due to hitting ruts and gullies.
There is an even better story about the winners, Jim Reddiex and Ken Tubman, relating to their survey of this event. One that didn't make it into A Boot Full of Right Arms but was told to me personally by Jim. However, if you haven't read the book, you are depriving yourself of a real experience, it is a story of true human courage wrapped up in a tale about a rally so vast it's hard to comprehend.
