Realised the minor wasn't my thing, so the choice was made obvious, and I bought the Marina! 8)

Guy I bought it off reckoned he couldnt drive it safely at much over 80 km/h (50mph) would this be right given that its a mk1?

Anything I can do to make it safely drive at normal highway speeds considering I drive 25km on the highway daily?

My MK1 will go happily at 60 to 65 MPH all day and I have been known to get a lot higher in speed and still it goes well.
just don't want to break it

Just be careful on corners but I have no problems in modern traffic and speed.

I am quite happy on motorways at up to 80-90 mph and 50-60 mph on normal roads. That's with a 1.8 engine and overdrive 5th gear. Say 60-70 mph on a standard gearbox on the motorway and around 50-60 mph on normal roads.

The key to 'normal' driving speeds is good suspension bushes and shock absorbers. If they are tired then it all gets a bit wobbly at speed.

Your TC is a Mk1, so the one you've just bought should handle pretty much the same.

My old 1750 Coupe had no trouble at a hundred and mumble mumble kmh , so it might just need some fresh bushes and damper oil to tighten it up.

Seeing as the TC has always had dead plates, and after I rebuilt it the first time and got it driving I wasnt old enough to have my license (had only just turned 15) I wasn't really able to try it on the highway I did admittedly get up to a speedo reading of 150km... and all I remember was being surprised at the lack of rattles, then the speedo cable snapped! :mrgreen:

It has reconditioned shocks in the front so in theory Ill just replace bushes and put a sway bar on the front and it should be alright? :?

Back in the Uk I was well known for being astoundingly quick from Norfolk to Cornwall back in th old days and my 1.8 sdl was quite happy around 130kph cruising on fast sweepers, not so great around tight corners tho :?
But definitely the key is good suspension bushes.

I have polyurethane all around (everywhere possible), Konis and 205-60x13 tires (oops, tyres ) It's quite happy at 75 all day on the motorway. The engine is allowed to breathe with the twin carbs and a cold air filter system, Aldon dizzy and strong street cam. I love it! 8)

Mine's completely standard, probably pretty knackered in most aspects, and running skinny tyres (Triumph Spitfire). It's suprisingly well behaved on the motorway, so long as it ain't windy...
