Police have to have reasonable suspicion that an offence is, has, or is about to take place to confiscate cameras. They can be heavy handed, but then thay can also be a bit too soft. They're humans.

Carrying an ID card diffuses any situation almost before it even becomes a situation. I'm not offended by carrying one. A policeman has the power to hold someone until they are satisfied that they are who that person is who they say they are. And quite right too.

If they aprehend someone creeping round your house and the guy says he is Joe Bloggs. How upset would you be if it turns out he wasn't and they'd let him go?

I know where you're coming from with the Jew angle and as it happens I do know a few who, I wouldn't say are happy, but certainly aren't bothered.

If the Police actually managed to attend and could be bothered to apprehend the intruder, I would expect them to do their job. Any criminal carrying his ID card in the course of a crime, would be a fool.
Either the intruders, or my ID card would not have prevented the crime from occuring, or the assisted the Police in the detection of the crime. It might have helped to identify the intruder, if he was stupid enough to carry one in the first place.
It seems to me that the Police are failing to recognise that they are the servants of the general public. They have been allowed to use legislation, created for one purpose, for the greater good of the population, and then applied it to a purpose for which it was not intended.
We were the originators of democracy, yet now we are one of the most watched and recorded and legislated, populations in the world. There is no way back to the presumption of innocence that we once held so dear.
I rest my case. It is the younger generation who will have to deal with 'Big Brother' because it will doubtless happen.
