Larry we might be a bit spread oot where we live membershipe wise, however, if you wanted to go a run on a sunday all you have to do is say. As you know i joined a new club called Autscots. You dinna need a classic car just be a petrol head. We meet once a month for a chin wag. Incedentally, some of our members come from Coatbridge Falkirk area, come to Kilmarnock to have a coffee or a drink. Next meetin first Monday in August Think it is the 6th. We are at thepark Hotel in Killie. We are having a road run same sunday as Bigger, which i cant go to as i am going to Bigger. however run is startin on your doorstep at Bothwell services south bound heading to Moffat then on to Selkirk before heading for home. Lunch in Moffat i think. If you want to club ecosse can meet up once a month or whatever and we can arrange a run somewhere even if it is to the seaside!

Re: Same old Same old.
Just got back from the Gloucestershire Steam Extravaganza (steam rally) this weekend, a tad damp but great fun. Perhaps look at more of that sort of thing than full on car shows? They are generally free entry and there's always loads going on- falconry displays to sawbenches. Sitting in a fold up chair behind my car all day like most the shiny brigade seem to do would bore me senseless...
Marina was fairly well recieved by the general public, if somewhat sneered at by some of the other car owners- good enough for me.
Unfortunately a lot have been cancelled- fingers crossed for better weather next year.

Ahh, I was probably lurking in the steam section- friends of mine were exhibiting the 1870 Baldwin stationary steam engine. Did take her round the ring on Saturday afternoon though, they cancelled the arena displays Sunday 'cos of the rain, so we had some displays of steam winching instead as they extracted the Showman's steam locos from the fair where they'd sat (and sunk) over the weekend

Re: Same old Same old.
Sounds like a good show chaps, steam rallies definitely offer plently of variety don't they? Things like a vintage steam driven funfair which is good for the little 'uns, and demonstrations of steam ploughing and threshing. I also like to see a good mixture of commercial vehicles and cars. I think my ideal show would be one which included a road run with lorries, buses and cars. Its a shame that most road runs are exclusively for one type of transport instead of a mixture.
It would be fantastic to see a BL road run with Marinas, Maxis and Allegros etc on the road with Leyland Marathons, 70s ergomatic cabbed Leylands and AECs and Mitchellotti cabbed Scammels and Crusaders, Leyland Atlanteans and Bristol VRs. That would be my idea of heaven.

Sounds good to me, i'm sure the health and safety lot would have a fit but i'd love to have a ride on some of the old buses, seems a shame just to stare through the window.ScreamingLordStokes wrote:Sounds like a good show chaps, steam rallies definitely offer plently of variety don't they? Fortunately my Mrs and the Kids really enjoyed the day, and are now pestering me to get the Marina finished, sounds I for one will be attending more shows in the future!
Ha Ha, people would pay to see that! Sounds much more exciting than some of the stuff we saw going round the arena. Some of the lorries were a bit modern for my taste, if you want to see Scania lorries from 1998 try the M5!PHUQ wrote:Ahh, I was probably lurking in the steam section- friends of mine were exhibiting the 1870 Baldwin stationary steam engine. Re: Same old Same old.
I used to own 2 old buses (ex Edinburgh Leyland Atlantean's AN68's) but eventually got rid of them for scrap because I lost total interest in them and the politics at the bus museums was terrible especially if the vehicle's engine was at the rear and it wasn't a half cab! I now concentrate on my wee BL fleet which comprises of a Marina saloon, Marina Pick up, 10cwt Van and an Austin mini 1000.
Beauty with brains behind it!
Re: Same old Same old.
That road run idea is fantastic, I'd love to see something like that.
They did attempt to line up the cars in a vaguely logical order on Friday, but with the car guys invariably rocking up at about 11 o'clock and then demanding a place by their mate (everything was supposed to be in position by 10, I rolled up at 9:15 and was the second car in the post '72 line- up) it didn't really work.
As for the modernish trucks, I actually really enjoyed the commercials section- it was huge, which meant they had some real variety there. Trouble is again only a small number of people bother with the arena bit- and it's often the younger, more enthusiastic owners with the younger trucks that "do their bit". Partly 'cos the trucks are less effort to drag out & round the arena...
Will be there with a couple of trucks next year hopefully- not mine- but we will be going round the ring! 1958ish Unipower Forester and early 1940's Diamond T 980.
Ooh, and as for riding on classic busses, Stroud's annual classic bus running day was in it's 11th year this year
