Almost a shame it had to lose the 70s jack-up kit and sidepipe....I did say almost....

I have a big box of Custom Car magazines from the 70's - some great pics and some great style, a lot of it best kept to the pages of a magazine though!

Yeah after posting my scan I did wonder if I'd gone a bit too far for this polite forum, but it is (or was) after all, a fast Marina, and the young lady on the cover was not being quite so coy on the centrespread which I did not scan! I've never read the article (I bought a job lot of CC's in 2005 to get about a dozen I really wanted) but I've picked up Moonshine had a V6, probably an Essex, and with those wheels and tyres, if it didn't have power assistance, the steering must have been something else...

Yeah, must dig out my box of mags and have a look at the centre spread - just can't really make out the murals too well in that scan

The jack up kit on this was just two thick pieces of steel each side bolted to the existing spring hangers! Must have put the shackle bushes under a fair bit of strain, no strengtheners between the steel either! Also had a fog light to light up the red rear axle and springs

That was the standard way of doing it back in the 70's most had a pair of rear fog lights as extra brake lights as well. You could buy those chrome plated spring hanger extensions for every motor accessory shop.

Well according to the blurb in the mag, Moonshine, built by Steve Smith, was begun in March '75 with the acquisition of a rolled written off van - which means the 'R' reg plate in '77 wasn't its original. Rear suspension was from an 'S' Type Jag, so the leaf springs were binned and replaced with a crossmember to hold the Jag IRS. Power was a Consul 2.5 litre V6 from a crashed car supposedly with 360 miles on the clock, and aside from some mods to the hubs to take the Wolfrace wheels, I quote..."Mounted well back, the V6 seems quite happy carried on standard Marina van suspension, the only mods being uprated Woodehead shox and 1.8 disc brakes" With what looks like a 10" Mountney wheel to steer with, men were men in those days!

Also quite topical in view of my own cooling problems, another quote - "Steve's only mistake was to try to retain the Marina 1100 radiator, which soon boiled even in November weather and with Kenlowe assistance".

Another quote - "2 1/2 Litres of Ford V6, which was preferred to a V8 as it could be slotted in without chopping the front of the body about and hanging the radiator on the front bumper. Like wot a certain magazine did".

I thought Custom Car did a custom Marina and I thought Moonshine was it, but clearly not. So this forum's header featuring a Marina with a protruding 'Trans Am' snout must be a graphic of Custom Car's Marina van/pickup then?

Cracking job- if it wasn't for the distinctive reg. no. (and the before photos!) I'd never have had it down as being the same car

Well , I have done about 150 miles in boppy and she has behaved quite well , its always run really hot and constant flushing hasn't sorted it , so the engine is I'm bits and nearly all water ways were blocked! So I've cleaned it all out , used a bendy metal rod to get around all the awkward bits , just waiting for the head gasket set to come to put it back together ! Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
