Fuel filters

I removed my 'big' filter and put back the non-return valve someone had fitted previously in its place. The car didn't stall when I next drove it but in its current state it struggled to get past 25mph, then yesterday when I checked both float chamber lid gaskets were wet. I've now removed the non-return valve and stuck a small fuel filter in the pipeline prior to it going in for fettling. Bearing in mind this car did have a hot running issue when I got it, it still remains to be seen whether or not there is a head gasket issue.
