The spacer DAM739 has been superseded by DAM3908.
All the parts are available from Rimmer Bros
If your old caged bearing has a manufacturer and part number on it, then quote it to your reconditioning kit supplier and they should be able to supply one for you.

My TC had the smaller bearing but was modified to have the larger bearing.

Thanks for the help, here is the new bearing compared to the old bearing, new to the left and old to the right. I believe that I have the earlier type then, if there was a spacer it has definitely gone although I can't remember there being one when removing the original bearing.

I would expect the spacer to be used with the narrower type bearing are you able to photograph the wide original bearing on the end of the main shaft and another picture of the original bearing in the 1st motion shaft

I agree David, the early one used the spacer according to the BL parts manual.

Bren, it occurred to me that the spacer may still be stuck on the front of the main shaft.

Thanks for the help chaps, I've attached some more photos for you showing the bearings on the main shaft, pretty sure the spacer has dissapeared. As can be seen the narrow type is also wider in diameter so it doesn't sit on the shaft properly.

Would a spacer push the bearing up to the end of the shaft?
If the spacer is missing then, either BL missed it out on the production line, or your gearbox has been badly rebuilt previously.
Both are possible.

The Narrow bearing is clearly wrong. I think Chris had sorted a couple of part numbers out. If you got a spacer would take the wide bearing to the end of main shaft. Personally I don't think its over important (better if you can get one though). Both the 1st motion shaft and main shaft are held in place by the relative main bearings. The function of this bearing is to keep both shafts in line radially as the gears will try and push them apart.

yes I think that the spacer would push it all the way. if you have a look at the photo with the original caged roller on you can see darkened patches so there was nothing sitting over those parts as they would be more shiny due to the friction. I know that on the first motion shaft the hole in which this roller sits has a smaller slot below to accommodate part of the main shaft, this smaller slot looks to be about the same length as the amount of mainshaft left after the roller bearing. I don't think that the gearbox has been off the car before, there is no evidence to suggest so and it looks pretty original. Bit odd this one

What's that at the bottom of the hole. It looks to me like the missing spacer. From the picture looks like its a seperate part. However the inner bearing face of the first motion shaft is badly worn and pitted.

When you pop the gearbox back into the car, make the 2 bolts that go through the the sump into the bottom of the bell housing have the right washers on. If you leave either the flat or spring washed off, the bolts travel to far into the bell housing and touch the flywheel locking the engine up.

One improvement you can look at is fitting the revised and stronger reverse gear and mechanism from the later gearbox. This means fitting a different lay shaft as well to match (the reverse gear has a different number of teeth) but the reverse gear itself is available from Moss I believe.

I think David could be right, it looks like the missing spacer is in the back of the first motion shaft.

Thanks again for the advice, I will see if that is the spacer and see if I can get it out although to me it looks like it has been machined that way ie. It is not the spacer but in fact a part of the first motion shaft itself. I did think that myself and have a quick go at getting it out but if it is the spacer it is well and truly stuck in there. Does anyone have any 1st shaft photos for comparison? I can order another spacer from Rimmer bros as they're cheap and no harm done in replacing it if that is the one. Does anyone have a part number for the earlier bearing as that too needs replacing.
