BL, like BMC before lied to build their shells with a high torsional rigidity compared to Ford and Vauxhall. Indeed, this is one of the reasons why for years I've believed the Marina was the best car for BL to rally since in two door coupe form it has a much stiffer shell than the Dolomite Sprint and of course it can be beefed up more by fitting a roll cage. The Mk2 Escort was designed from the start with motor sport in mind and is therefore stiffer than the Mk1 version.
With SLK Ben I think that you should look at strengthening the car carefully, rally prepared Marinas required less extra strengthening than a Mk1 Escort (even with the type 49 shell), but after 30 years on the road any shell will be slightly weaker than when it left the factory.
I like what you have done with SLK Ben and I'm sure a Ford/Vauxhall/K series conversion kit would help save cars which would otherwise be scrapped or bangered.
On the subject of original cars, very few cars are perfectly original, I own a 19,000 mile 1978 Allegro which had the original tyres when I brought it in 1998, yet I had to change these for new ones because the sidewalls were cracked and it would have been dangerous to drive.
Originality is good, but there comes a point when new parts need to be fitted to retain a certain level of safety.

Looks like you`ve been having fun on this one boys!!, i noticed the integrity of the Marina Axle was mentioned earlier, the MMOC did a feature on this years ago, as i remember if the Axle was strengthened with a horizontal bar across the casing, and oil baffles were fitted the Marina axle was perfectly capable of handling anything up to 150 BHP, we got the details from Caterham cars, as they were using them along with a Quaife LSD .
