Your van may have had Walford trunnions on that have a separate threaded bolt that goes over the original leg. Do they have two grease points? You can remove the treaded bolt and put original ones back on if the threads are ok.

it has a grease nipple at the very bottom, it pops out every time i try to grease the joint, i will look into it will i need to change both sides or will one of one style on of the other be ok until it requires a refresh ?

Ideally you should change in pairs. Having two different types will have a knock on effect with your camber and ultimately steering.

You should be able to manually open or close a telescopic shock absorber. There is no spring inside to push it back.

All the weight of the front of the car is supported on the torsion bars. All the shock absorbers do is control the vertical speed of the suspension, there is no real load on them unless they are moving relatively fast.

If you are blowing the grease nipple out, it's threads are probably worn. I would not expect a trunnion to have stripped threads as the nipples are a softer metal. Replacement nipples have a common British thread so readily replaced.
Provided all the old dirty grease is cleaned out of the trunion, and new grease installed, the grease nipple does very little but keep the dirt out. It's not that important as it's not a pressurised system. Even a blob of mastic will seal it temporarily.

Chris did an article in the club mag describing the history of trunnions, I don't think he included Walford's. They do appear on eBay occasionally. As said before, always change both sides, they have opposite threads.

In order for the nipple to stay in, it must have a thread! It seems to me that the nipple has been over tightened at some point stripping the thread off the nipple itself, possibly leaving the remains of its metal in the trunnion.

It's time to find a new 'threaded' nipple, and get a dentists pick, to remove any residue metal from the trunion itself.

No point doing anything until you have a replacement nipple with threads.

As far as the grease nipples poping out, I have also had this, as has been said some nipples are NOT threaded, so the solution is to buy new nipples with threads on, then drill and tap for the new size nipple, often they are still BSP.

In practise if the nipple pops out then it has not been greased often enough and a new trunnion is needed anyway.

My Walford trunnions have lasted over 20 years with regular greasing of both nipples .............with copperslip.

Fitted new urethane bushes to my brake-reaction rods ( or whatever those rods that go forwards from the suspension arm is called).
An easy job and made for a less rattly suspension.

They are called Tie Bars in the UK, your description is very accurate in a suspension engineering sort of way.

If you have a lot of rattles, it's the tie rod/reaction bar moving against the chassis member.
I have seen some were the rods were badly waisted, and some very oval holes in the chassis.
New poly bushes do not make up for either problem, though they do conceal it from view.
I wondered why the poly bushes were not made with a small shoulder on them to centralise them in the chassis.
