Would you believe it failed on excessive play n/side in steering rack...
He said i let it go last year but its got worse now, you should have fixed it,
i said i did, thats a new rack i bought at the BMC show last August & fitted with new rack bulkhead bushes & new track rod ends...
Fair's fair, when he showed me it is quite bad, & the knocking was still there even after fitting the new rack
Don't you love doing a job twice...
So ive got something for the weekend (thats what the barber used to say wasn't it )...
I'll have to look up your article on it Chris...
Sod it..
Gil...

Aww shame. I've got a rack here that needs the same job doing... After doing yours you will be an expert! How can I bribe you to do mine :-)

Fitted a complete new exhaust system to the coupe replaced my mgb performance manifold with a standard tc exhaust and inlet manifold now sounds much quieter from inside the car. Even seems to go a bit better.
Whilst the manifold was off I noticed the side cover plate had been leaking oil, as I didn't have any and no time to wait as wanting to take car to a show they didn't get changed.
Can they be changed with manifolds in situ ??.

They actually should be one cork and one rubber according to the parts manual. It says cork at the front, neoprene (rubber) at the rear. Confirmed on various MGB websites.

Thanks Chris,
Yes MOT failure, last tuesday, which was a surprise as it failed on " excessive movement of trackrod arm n/side, this is on a new (supposedly ) steering rack, bought from Peterborough
last year... things don't last forever do they...
So having one of Chris's "nolathane" bushes in stock & boned up on his instructions on "marina coupe" & with the loan of richards track rod end cracking tool, ive had a go at refurbing it...
Its now back together & just about to start refitting it to gabby,
Watch this space ...

Just to add my comments from the kit car world, again.
If you have the time and skills to follow Marinacoupe's method, do so. If you trust another engineer to follow his instructions, use him.
All too often I hear of 'so called' reconditioned racks that fail MOT within a year or so, on a low mileage car. There may be reliable re conditioners out there, but before you rely an them, ask where their new bush came from. If it wasn't Marrinacoupe, I doubt that it has the necessary pedigree.
PS. You can pay me later Chris.
