Lots of scratches had to be filled in after scraping off the flaky sun damage,

It's ready for paint pretty much, just need to give it another coat of plastic primer. I'll post some more pics when it's done
Thanks again for doing the wheel for me gareth, I’m sure you will do another cracking job on it. ImageImage

I just hope they didn't find an assembly-line worker dead in it at the end of the shift when it was made

Today I received a reminder from the NZ Transport Agency that the rego of my Marina Coupe "GT83" is about to expire.
I have never had this car on the road yet, but I was astounded at the cost for a 12 month renewal.
$19.69..!
Now THAT makes sense...

I take it that this is like our Vehicle Exise Duty? (Or road tax). What are the usual rates? But how long has the car been off the road and why has NZ Transport Agency suddenly decided to chase it up?

We have "endless" registration, so if the vehicle is not in use it must be on hold - or you lose the plates.
Like your SORN I believe.
So it was simply that the previous 12 month on hold period was terminating that led to the reminder.
My under 40 Marinas cost me about $124 per year.

Yes it sounds similar to SORN except we don't lose the registration number for an un-SORNed vehicle...we just become liable for a fine and possibly prosecution! It sounds as if plates are issued to the owner rather than the vehicle, like in some states in the USA and I think Italy as well. All of which makes the issue of British cars losing their original registration numbers (and therefore in some people's eyes, part of their identity and heritage) when they are sold for money to become someone's personslised registration, rather interesting. Some classic cars never have that kind of heritage.

Well that backfired on me a bit. A guy called Jay wanting to sell his uncle's car he's inherited, posting on FB trying to get an idea of value and as per usual I write an essay, while others are answering his questions, and I'm thinking he's attached to it so try to word it as if he wants to see the car saved it's worth trying to find the right buyer and he says "Thanks mate, not really attached to it so if anyone wants the engine and gearbox, great!" :rolls:

Out of curiosity what is Jay looking for a price on/selling? Thanks.

Well, I think Michael Trigger-Carpenter has mentioned a figure of maybe £500, but Jay is fishing for a value and he lives 300 miles from the car he has inherited, and currently hasn't got any photos to show. He is just giving a written description. Apparently it runs, but has stood since about 1986 under a pile of blankets in a concrete garage. Chris Weedon has made an offer to appraise it if something can be arranged. I think it is an 'L' reg 1800cc coupe.

Probably looking to maximise.
Parts or complete. Whichever.. Doesn't matter.
Enthusiastic people like many of us on here wouldnt be too concerned as long as as we can minimise the cost to get roadworthy..
It's getting better in the respect that values have increased lately and even basket cases of other marque's are getting beyond reach so knocks down towards our stuff.
A1Perfect Cars not so long ago were fetching more in the scrappage schemes than ebay.
Fortunately that's gone away now . However the demand for the running gear has increased significantly which is a worry . So even if we can save good shells there's still possibilities should people have the inclination.

Where is the demand for the running gear coming from? Still from the Morris Minor upraters? Are people still using 1.8 engines for MGBs?

That was me chatting to him, he asked if it was worth more or less than £500, I suspect more but without seeing it your guess is as good as mine, I think it's possibly a TC though as he think it has twin carbs. Saying that I have a feeling someone else who was sniffing around it who offered £500 has agreed to buy it.
