It's only a visual test for pre 73 cars Sean. The later ones are on emissions. I wouldn't think the redex would damage it but it may dislodge any crud from inside the carb and push it into the engine. A strip down and rebuild of the carb should help but you may need a new jet by the sounds of things!

can anyone confirm about the emissions sean as i'm sure he knows what he's doing.....but then again
I think I may have solved the fuel problem I found a split in the rubber fuel pipe coming from the tank where it pushes onto the inlet side of the fuel pump, possibly causing the pump to pull in air instead of fuel ??. I have cut it back slightly and re fitted the clip it now seems to rev ok on the spot but until I get it out on the road which is a bit naughty then I cant really test it
thanks Ben any ideas where I can get a rebuild kit for an 1800 as i've only got 10 days to get it back to him

Defo needs emissions! Can't remember what the levels should be tho.
Get a rebuild kit direct from the makers:

Ahh. Stu you will get a rebuild kit from here
http://www.burlen.co.uk/ give it a good strip down and clean up then try the retest. I would order a new overhaul kit anyway

the gas analyser results were co 4.5%vol=fail hc1200ppm vol 1811ppm vol fail if that makes sense to anyone thanks for the burlen link Ben and Sean will see about sorting that but with the car only having covered 14500 miles it seems surprising if it's worn ??

It's probably more to do with the car being off the road that it has gone.. that and modern fuels tend to be more corrosive to older carbs!
Good luck!

I think the mixture must be running rich as the exhaust smoke is black when you rev the engine the mot tester said if I can give it a good blast out and then bring it back they can check the emissions first he said they should be able to tweek the carb enough to get it through.......hopefully

i've done a bit more investigating and it's as if the choke is stuck on almost but the mechanism etc is returning ok the only other thing I could find was the plunger on the bottom was stuck in one position according to the haynes manual that has something to do with mixture so i've pushed the plunger back in after lubricating it and the black smoke seems to have stopped wether it's enough to pass time will tell just hope it doesn't keep cutting out on my way there

if its cutting out stu you can speed up the idle speed by turning the screw in or check your mixture as it may be too weak now 8)

stripped and cleaned out the float chamber and removed and cleaned the needle etc and re filled the dash pot with oil it sounds a lot better now but I think it's gone the other way as it seems reluctand to run without choke even if it's fully warmed up you put the choke in and try to rev it and it seems to cut out somehow if you back of the throttle and pull out the choke it will run so something else I need to get to the bottom of i'm going to re gap the points and fit new plugs as i've got them here anyway and i'm going to take the sender out of the tank and clean the filter and blow through the lines but other than that i'm running out of ideas

I still think the mixture is too weak. If it was running ok before (but rich) I cant see the points causing the problem. I would change the points and rotar arm anyway just for good measure but I would do the carb first especally if the timing is ok.

My TC was running fast when I got it and on inspection of the carbs one piston in one of the carbs was stuck closed so weak on one side and it needed choke to get it going. When choke put in the car faultered and wanted to stall.
This is all down to sticky petrol residue left in carbs as car was not run for a long time.
If you have been weakening mixture to get it though MOT, then found stuck jet or similar then you need to richen back up again. So I agree with ado28

new plugs, new points and new condenser rotor arm and cap both ok checked the needle etc absolutely no signs of any wear or scoring cleaned it all and put it back together
