Going through switzerland with not too much to report

Image

Image

- soon were on the border to Germany

Image

decided to have a run to Ravensburg as it was a small town outside the main routes and they do make those puzzle which my better half is found off (might be necessary if i would like a bed to sleep in when coming back with yet another marina :) )

Image

Lunch in germany Bratwurst and for once some danish beer
Image

Image

the small roads in germany (and italy) isn't that small so keeping a steady 80 km/h is perfect both for the car and for enjoying the countryside much more than from the motorway

As the day come to an end is time to get something to eat
Image

and as we passed this sign in a small village - what better place to stop

Image

Parking an old classic almost often get you in touch with the people, also here were we were invited to the table with some people to discuss old cars , beer and life in general :)

We now have to decide wheter or not to go ti Kiel and take a ferry to Oslo , or to drive north up to Denmark and Sweden to Oslo.

Smaller roads in germanye sometimes gives you a suprise
yes thats a cobblestone covered road !! - Although just for a kilometer or so - still something i wasn't expecting
Image

After the mountains in Switzerland - germany looked quite flat

We chickened out and put the front of the car towards kiel and planned for a ferry from Kiel to Oslo. Well this ment that we could reach the ferry next day if we drove all night OR could stop and have a sleep over. Since we now suddenly for the first time since the trip started had a set goal (other than pushing north) we somehow found ourselvs driving the motorway towards Kiel .

It didn't go too fast and we were even overtaken by an Austin 7

Nightfall - on with the lights going at steady 80 km/h towards Kiel. Since the diesel is all mechanical we somehow didn't notice that the lights slowely faded more & more. Not untill all trucks that were passing us put all their frontlights and sounded their horns. It turned out that driving with the lights on drauned more current from the battery than the alternator could replace.

Stopped at the first available gas station and checked the lights - to little current to even make the direction-lights go on :o
Checked the fan-belt and it could do with some tightening - out with the spanners - but in the back of my head lurked the thought : "I could'nt find more than 1 1/2" wrench when i hastily prepared for leaving norway" And sure enough with only one 1/2" spanner i couldn't undo the alternator mounting bolts as i needed to stop the nut spinning when turning the bolt.

So what to do ..... The gas station although reasonably big didn't have any tools but did have some jumper-cables. Bought a set of jumpercables. Decided to wait 3-4 hours time until dawn so we could continue towards kiel without using any electicity.

At 6 o'clock we were off car run sweet as a dream - while we were planning on what to do when in kiel. After an hours drive or so we tried to stop the engine and turn the starter. Still not enough juice - so it was clear that we had to do something when arriving in Kiel.

Somehow we didn't by a 13mm/ or 1/2" wrench which we in hindsight should have, instead i bought a jumper-pack which turned out to be really shit, almost not capable to power a flashlight. The crew on the ferry both loading and unloading was used to people forgetting their lights on etc. so we were able to borrow their jump-pack to start the car.

view from the ferry

Pretty knackered after the night before it was early to bed.

Finally home in Norway and the car fits snuggly in me thinks :)
Image

In summary somewhere between 3500-4000 kilometres. 0,6 l diesel to every 10 kilometer, 2 liters of oil . Countless amount of beer, lots of small places - nice countruroads. Would i do it again - Anytime :) - (in fact i'm planning a trip to russia next summer if i can get the car in question finished)

Any regrets - only one - somehow i missed out on venezia - alzheimer moment :(

foot-note
no beers in this post ???
oh yes there is :
