No need to apologise Gil, the AR article concentrates on the early history and it was good to get some from the "other end" of the production. That said- I can't see anywhere it says that it was designed to fit on a car track, the bit quoted by David suggests that it's dimensions were dictated by what they managed to womble from the parts bin as much as anything else.

Matt, went to ....motor car sherpa van history.& clicked on the first option...
sherpa van 74/82 history.
It does state about " built to go on car track "....
