Thanks mate

Wish I had known it was for sale, a 71 coupe and it would have been local to me as well  Still it's in better hands with you than it would be with me

Good question Chris.

44 surviving 1971 cars in all forms in total

16 SORN (including the Marlin)
13 Taxed
12 Unlicensed (not Taxed or SORN)
3 Exported (possibly four, which would mean 11 unlicensed if so)

Does anybody know the owner of BAX 114J TC Coupe? Would love to chat to them, nice early registration date  Could it knock JRO 445K off the top spot of oldest known TC??

Please see attached the first public edition of the 71 register of surviving cars. I have removed the last two digits of chassis numbers except in cases where the chassis number of a particular car is available on public areas of this forum.

All the pictures are my own or I have permission to use them. If anybody sees their car without a picture and has a picture they'd be happy to let me use then please let me know

'JWY' (Joey) is one of Harry Hayes' cars so is not a million miles from you. It's his everyday car and he restored it in the 90s (there was an article in Practical Classics years ago about its restoration), it still looks good now. I hope I can get mine looking as nice

Just realised there are no Damask 71 cars on the register! Shame as that was one of the original launch colours.

Ah yes I remember now, we were parked next to Harry and JWY at the 2010 national at Levisham. ::):

Yes that is a shame Josh, wonder if there is an early Damask car out there waiting to be discovered?

I hope so! Hopefully when it does appear it will be on my driveway too as I do love a bit of Damask :-D

Maybe it will be WOH 498J the 1.8 DL saloon from the first set of press cars, or is that wishful thinking? Would be nice because as far as I know there are no surviving 1.8 DL saloons of any year

Anyway an updated copy of the surviving cars register is attached just for Ben

Cheers Bryan! Now updated with GC2 assuming it is original. GC1 has also been added to the full register (of surviving and dead cars). Will try and get that up here sometime in the next month but still have a few cars to put on it.

And now the first edition of the complete register (didn't have as many cars to add as I thought I would)

This is a list of all the 71s known to me, alive or dead...

If there is a 'Y' in the picture column then it means I have a picture of the car here but haven't yet got permission to include it in the register.

I suspect this project will slow down a bit now. I now have details for nearly all the surviving 71 cars- I suspect (hope) that most of the future updates will be adding in chassis numbers of cars already on the register. Would be nice to find some pictures of some of the dead ones as
well just for reference. Hopefully a few more survivors will surface as well

All the GLT ***J cars were presumably part of a big fleet order.

Edit: Just noticed this post is the 71st reply to this thread- very appropriate  :ugeek:

We now have NINE more confirmed surviving 71 cars! Truly astonishing. We are now at over 50 surviving 71 cars in total!

We also have two TC Coupes confirmed as being older than the previous oldest known TC Coupe. These ones have chassis numbers below 3500 so they'll be hard to beat!

Sadly 26 1971s that I have been given details of recently have not been taxed or SORN'd for a while (ranging from the early 90s up to 2013) so it looks like we are still losing early cars.

I can now confirm that NWB 185K which 'WPR678B' posted details of was a 71 build car, scrapped last year.

An update register will be available in the next couple of weeks. One error in all previous editions, GPC 421J is chassis number 9475 (chassis number has been posted in the public section of this forum in the past) rather than 4754 so it is no longer the oldest surviving 1.3 Coupe, that award now belongs to EYC 171J.

Take a look at the picture below for what could have been the oldest surviving 1.3 Coupe. Note it has the very early side window trim running along the top of the stainless steel trim. VUR 870J was a 1.3 Coupe (unlicensed since 2000) that had a pre-launch registration date of 23/4/71 so must have had a chassis number less than 5000 and no sign of this trim, therefore it is clear this trim was dropped from the Marina before it was even launched!
Sadly CMO 160J has not been taxed since 1990 and was being used as student transport back then so is now probably dead. Shame as it looked to be in good condition

GLT 386J was owned by a Club member in the mid 1990s. Sadly he has not been heard of since then and the car has been off the road since the late 80s. It had a chassis number just over 10,000 and had the early rear hubs (the prongs around the central hub nut for locating the rear wheel) so they must have disappeared between 10,000-14,000. GLT 386J was part of a large fleet order covering cars GLT 200J - GLT800J.

My thanks go to Club member John Lawson for sending me these photos along with details of loads of other Marinas from his extensive Marina archive.

Cheers Frank :) I do have that one down, it's the second oldest survivor- funny how they are both Bedouin 1.3 DL saloons! Seems to have been a really popular colour in 71. Not seen a photo of it from the back before, looks like a nice car. Andy W put me in touch with the owner and I tried to persuade him to get it out to a few more shows
