Fast Marina Magazine

Just to introduce myself. Name is Roger and live just outside Cardiff. This week I acquired the vehicle below which has been stored the last eight years since its owners death in a dry garage and is a 2 owner car. I believe from the condition that it has been garaged all its life. Just over 54,000 on the clock.

A clean of the points and new battery made her fire up immediately. The handbrake had been left off but the brakes had stuck as normal but the freed off straight away. The clutch also has stuck but starting in gear and driving for 10 foot sorted that out as well. I must admit I am very surprised at how well she drives. I think there is an air lock in the cooling system as se appears to be running hot.

Bodywork wise the lower part of the front wings are rusty and some bubbles down them near the A pillar. Haven't looked underneath properly but she looks very solid. 10p piece size hole in right well of boot and a small plate has been welded at some time to the rear offside sill.

All electrics are working, in fact I think if there is no rust undeneath she will fly through an MOT tomorrow.

I must admit I am a Land Rover man myself but the old girl is appealing.

I have had a few landys ,but just to play in the mud , I had enough of driving the noisey/slow things in the army...

I recently coverted into the world of marinaism...

I love old land rovers, my mate has a 1956 (?) Series 1 LWB that he wants me to restore for him. It is a lovely piece of kit!

A small update. Just checked the registration docs and it has in fact been a one family car, the wife of the first owner having reg'd it in her name after his death. So now I am certain it has always been garaged.

Is there anyone knowledgeable of these in the South Wales area who could pop along and take a look. I am not really what I should be looking for or where the weaknesses/problems are found. Land Rovers are more like Mechano. If it falls off, bolt another one on.

As for areas to look out for the top list is:

1. Rear spring hangers
2. Rear heal boards
3. Front chassis legs
4. Front floor pans
5. Rear boot wells

Looks very tidy from the pics,what a great find.

You havnt mentioned but I presume you will be giving the brake system a complete make over due to the length of time its been inactive.
Dont want to be bombing down the road only to find the master or slave cylinder rubbers giving out.....dont forget the clutch seals as well.

Landy`s are better to weld cos the chassis is high up....The front axle is best filled with grease cos the ball joints always leaks...Clutch jobs are nightmares you have to take the floor up...

Marina

Watch the marinas seat bolts ,both my seats were hanging down...

Check all the wheels turn free and there is no play...

Check steering gators

Exhaust leaks

They are the bits of the floorpan where your rear passengers heals sit

Looks like your o/s steering gator is split ,that will be a fail ...Also the sill o/s looks very rusty at the front ,the rear has got a patch and not been seem welded at the end....Usually warning sign`s for testers...

The o/s front wing looks like it could do with sorting and usualy the inner has gone as well the mot man might be corrosion withing suspention point...

You nearside front small brake pipe looks bad [corroded]...

But you front valance looks ace and you boot is not that bad.... 8)

I made a front lower if you have a look in the you reader projects bit....

Is any of the front floor wells wet?

Go inside the car and see if you can press the inner sills specially the o/s front..

Ow nice exhaust...
