Washer / Wiper Stalk

Hello Marinaists...

During my MOT the tester pressed the windscreen washer stalk and the washer stayed on... it just p!ssed it's fluid until it was empty and then the tester just looked at me with that "what shall we do about that then..." look.

I stepped in with "I saw it work... it's just run out" and hastily unplugged the washer motor as it was just whirring away... he passed it.

What do we think the problem is - collapsed switch inside the stalk? If so, new column controls or can I replace parts ?

Not posted in the tech section as it's just banter...

Cheers...
Rob

new stalk
it IS possible to open it and fix/relocate the spring again. i managed to open one (withou braking it too much , but when trying to get it back together.........
So i ended up replacing it :)

New stalk is ideal, but all that is inside is two open contacts on the end of the stalk, a compression spring and a metal bridge in the button bit that you push down.

Just done my Horn button - same principle. Mk1s are very easy to fix, you can (carefully) tweak the end cap off with your fingers to avoid damaging the plastic. Usually it's the spring that breaks, take the remains of the spring to your bit box or if all else fails take it down to a motor factor and find a replacement.

Never worked on later kit, but I expect that they will be the same inside.

Try doing it yourself first - cheaper and quicker.

Hey ! Thanks for asking...

I did !.. the spring had just dislodged - probably the ape-like handling of the MOT tester (he was about 13 though ;))

I didn't but the stalk off the bay of death, thank god.
