Hello all!

I've recently been intouch with the DVLA regarding a Marina LE that my Granddad owned from new. We know that from the online tax website it was last on the road in 1991 but has never been taxed or sorn'd since.

I asked DVLA if we could transfer the plate to our LE and if they could contact the last know owner. I got a slightly positive responce that says we can transfer the number plate but that they could not help with the last know owners details or if the car still exists. I assume this is to do with the Data Protection Act.

My question is how can I

A) find out if the car actually exists

B) If it dosen't then how can I transfer the plate? Can I just apply for the V5 and pay a £19 fee? :?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well i had a mk2 escort that i knew was scrapped in 1994,but was still on the dvla records as unlicensed.I saw the car in a breakers yard in 1994.It was my first car but i didnt keep a note of the chassis number.So i got a friend of mine to do a full data check on the car so i could obtain the chassic number.I then applied to dvla for the documents as if i had just purchased the car as i knew the car already had been scrapped a long time ago.The new fee is £26 not £19 as previously.Hope this helps,if you have got the chassis number i would just apply for the documents and hope for the best

Can I therefore transfer the plate of a car I know to have been scrapped??

I tryed this with my great grand fathers old 1959 Mini, It hadn't been taxed sinse the early 90's so i presumed it had been scrapped..

I applied for the logbook as you are sugesting, The next thing i had was the Police on the phone asking why i was applying for a car that was in someones garage..

Got away with it in the end as i said all i was trying to do was locate the vehicle.. the Police were kind enough to pass on my details to the current owner.. end result, car found. Job done..

I was under the impression that the donor car which you wanted the number plate off had to be MOTed and on the road!! :shock:
As once scrapped the plate would be gone!

If what you say is correct can we all not go along to the scrap yard and get a new number plate

When the old owner of my original Jubilee transferred his number plate to his new car and the Jubilee got a standard plate back (RUF 632M), both cars had to be road worthy and inspected by DVLA centre at Brighton for chassis numbers etc!!
I guess this must have change!!

Interesting.. Any ideas who can do a data check for me? I assume you mean HPI?
