Removing wiper assembly
I have one wiper that doesn't go on the boy's coupe. Do you have to take the entire assembly out from under the dash, or can you just remove the dud one from the shaft under the dash? (We have two spare/dead cars to experiment on.) The manual of course, does not say!!

Re: Removing wiper assembly
The removal of the wiper wheel-box is a real swine of a job, is it the passenger side one (nearside)? for some reason it always seems to be that one.I take it your car is a MK2/3 i found the quickest way in the long term was to remove the 8mm bolts that secure the complete dash unit,i know this seem a lot of work unless you can work in very confined spaces (access gained N/S via glove box removal O/S gained via clock unit removal) the seemingly harder way is in fact easier (for me anyway) as you can have the room to work (but try your own way first)
And yes you can remove the faulty unit on it's own they are independent of each other, when you refit the replacement unit really pack it well with a good quality grease,i have used copper slip (copper grease) in the past with no apparent harmful effects.
The job is straightforward but fiddly and time consuming ,but at the most a morning should do the entire job (including a tea break)

Re: Removing wiper assembly
Thanks for that. It's the drivers side luckily. I assume you can just wind it off the end and wind a new one on?

Re: Removing wiper assembly
Now it's years since i did one of these, but they (wheel-boxes) are held on to the outer casing/tube with two 7mm bolts that simply need to be un-bolted and re-bolted onto the spiral inner cable, that bit is really simply (it's the getting to that stage that's the hard part)
Once you have fitted your new wheel-box,you will no doubt need to re-postion your wiper arms to the correct settings (in fact taking the wiper arms off first might be a wise move.
Don't throw away the old unit with a good de-grease and a tig welder you can weld new metals onto the old worn gear and then file it up for a replacement.
