Save old cars - bring back free Historic road tax

Post by Dep-O » Mon Apr 27, 2009 6:51 pm

After hearing the bad news about the scrappage incentive, we're trying to do something to stop old cars with soul being turned into washing machines.

We believe that by restarting the rolling 25yr Historic road tax class - you now, the free one - that this will not only encourage cars to be recycled but it will also help save old cars for future generations and give hard-up motorists a real break in this nasty, deep recession.

if you agree, please do sign up and spread the word.

Signed just like the others I have signed :(

Hopefully one will work, as I will still be a student when I am driving so cant afford the £205 a year to tax a 1.8 when the price rises kick in more next year.

Hi,

Strange how the conservative gave us the free rolling tax date and the peoples party 'labour' took it off us!

Interesting concept?

For years I've been waiting for someone to ask of my green credentials with our old cars, but there has been no opportunity to point out that for every ton of steel, aluminium, glass, plastic or what ever in its final form 20tons of CO2 will have been released into the atmosphere and considerably more spoil deposited somewhere. Our cars weigh less than a ton, but moderns weigh an average of 1 1/4 tons (medium volvo estate 1 3/4 tons). My cars are 9, 23, 37,48 years so I think I'm green!!!!!

I even wrote to the Chancellor once(guess who and got a fatuous reply).

No harm in trying again though.

The most a car pollutes is when it is made! So when the government want people to buy more new cars, they want us to be less green which contradicts their other polices!

I know the ones they want us to buy are already made sitting in a field getting covered in poo, but maybe they should not have made so many in the first place
They should be asking people to hang on to their cars but encourage them to maintain them to a good standard so they don't pollute unnecessarily.

Never mind the fact when a volcano erupts it releases more CO2 than man has ever produced. And never mind the fact the Earth has been heating up and cooling down since it was formed/created or whatever you believe in. And of course the Earth has been without polar ice caps before.

Still it's a convinient way to tax people...

Hi,

As for global warming, Oliver Cromwell died of Malaria and as far as I'm aware he went no further south than London, so the fens or Ireland must have got quite warm at some point?

Here are a few points to bear in mind

The car scrappage schemes, primary purpose is to provide a boost to new car sales and to help the motor industry in the current economic downturn. The Association of British Drivers (ABD) is less optimistic about the prospects for the scheme, and comments on many of the downfalls they see such as these i have listed below.

Firstly the government had made a misleading statement. It is not a £2,000 discount from them,as £1,000 is coming from motor manufacturers and the other £1,000 from the government. If you were to walk into a car dealers today you could probably get £2,000 knocked of the price of a new car just bay negotiate. With the scrappage scheme you will not get that on top of the discount, many people driving cars over ten years old won't be able to afford a new car, even with a discount.

The old vehicle must…
• be a passenger car or small van up to 3.5 tonnes
• be first registered in United Kingdom on or before 31 July 1999
• be currently registered with DVLA to the registered keeper making the application, or currently on Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
• have a current MoT test certificate
• have a registered owner with a UK address and the owner must have been the registered keeper of the vehicle continuously for the preceding 12 calendar months before the order date of the new vehicle.

The new vehicle must be…
• a passenger car or small van up to 3.5 tonnes
• first registered in the UK after the date the scrappage scheme is launched and declared new at first registration in the UK with no former keepers
• a UK specification vehicle
• registered to the same registered keeper as the registered keeper of the eligible vehicle to be scrapped

The new vehicle must be…
• a passenger car or small van up to 3.5 tonnes
• first registered in the UK after the date the scrappage scheme is launched and declared new at first registration in the UK with no former keepers
• a UK specification vehicle
• registered to the same registered keeper as the registered keeper of the eligible vehicle to be scrapped.

The scheme is also voluntary, so not all manufacturers or dealers may participate in it.

Might it be better. for the economy to keep older cars on the road so people could have their cars repaired at local garages – where some 600,000 people are employed?

I think the government is also missing another point!
When France and Germany did this scheme it supported their car industry, the only cars which will be eligible for the scheme will originate from another country!
So apart from possibly supporting some UK jobs we will be boosting other countries’ economies!

When visiting Germany or France see how many French / German car there are to foreign ones! Not many! Come to the UK and Wow what a mix.

I bet France and Germany are rubbing their hands together as their scheme comes to the end ours will start and help them!
what a great idea. NOT
Keep old cars going!
