Fast Marina Magazine

If anyone would be kind enough to provide a few pointers I would appreciate it! Trying to find out what model my Marina is as there is nothing written and the badges are missing

Which one's got the centre console standard? My Coupe must have been a Super, because it had the three gauges (clock not rev counter), but no centre console. I fitted a centre console and rev counter from a wreckers.

There is a Red Six brochure on the OzMarina website, which says the 2-door Super came standard with a Luxury Pack (optional for the 4-door), which included centre console, rev counter, reclining cloth seats, leather sports steering wheel, and a push-button radio.

The TC centainly had the rev counter, centre console, and wood rim sports steering wheel.

That is an SDL of the 1300 and Mk2 persuasion. DL's didn't have carpets, just rubber mats or any outside 'bling' and are very scarce now as most went for some creature comforts in the SDL, which by Mk2 variants had outside stainless rubbing strips as well.

just to add another wrinkle......wasnt the triple pod dash optional on all 1.8's apart from tc'S Where it was standard??

I only say this cos my 1st ever car was a 72 limeflower 1.8 SDL coupe.....chrome wheelarch trim but NO triple pod dash....all matchin numbers, no re-shells (ahem lol)

I had always assumed that the triple pod dash was standard on Mk1 SDL, my 1974 car has it and it's not mentioned on the original bill of sale as an extra.

Maybe on the early cars it was an extra? Unless someone has one to hand I can check in the Mk1 parts manual (Jubilee Nut?) at the weekend.

so its an SDL then? and one other question, whats the speed i should drive at most to keep the revs outside the critical range to take care of the engine?

I would say being a mk2 it's a super looks just like the one I had

Opening front quarterlights if original suggests that this is a ckd kit if this car is from Malta where they were locally assembled.The engine bay being a non standard Mk2 colour also makes me think this may not be a normal UK built car.Colours and specs for Malta were decided locally and could use various available alternatives from the UK parts bin.Big favourite for most surviving Maltese Marina saloons is the Perkins 1.5 Diesel engine

the engine bay is that colour because the previous owner tried taking care of the rust and painted it with rust protection paint. In certain parts the red still shows. Most common Marina's in malta are running a 1.5 diesel BMC engine, and now also some people are fitting a 1.5 turbo diesel toyota!.

any idea about the speeds i should drive at? the engine is a 1.3.

For a sensible cruising speed I would suggest around 60mph. The 1.3 is fairly low geared so without thrashing the engine 1st gear takes you to say 5mph, 2nd to about 15-20mph, 3rd to about 35mph and fourth to whatever speed you can stand before your fillings start rattling and your ears explode. Sometimes you can do away with 1st and start off in 2nd, for a quick gettaway I sometimes start in 1st and go straight into 3rd. The A series is quite a flexible engine in that it will pull readily away from 20mph in top gear. Good luck with it anyhow, hope this helps.

I always found my 1.3 seemed to cruise well at 55mph ish. Just felt right about there.

You can also put larger tyres on the car to get better performance and economy and grip.My TC runs on 175-R13 tyres and even a 1.3 has enough torque to run on 165R13 (not 70 series).I have been to Malta this year and saw some Marinas fitted with larger aftermarket wheels -some Maltese Marinas are very well cared for, and others are dying - i photographed 2 vans on a scrap pile, the bottom one is telecom yellow
