Has this been done before? Seems a very specific choice of cylinder head... shot in the dark, is that the DOHC head that will fit an Imp with a bit of work? I known DOHC- ing an Imp is an expensive process, I can't imagine doing it to a Marina will be any cheaper. Brian (Martec) is the one to speak to- got to have a nosey at his conversion at Burford and it looks like it was built that way.

This is a well known conversion on A series Minis, so should work well. Your likely to need a stronger gearbox and back axle as well as brakes though.

^ That would explain the choice then. I'd forgotten that the Marina shares an engine with the mini
My boss is an Imp tuning nut (owns a Davrian and a Clan, the greedy whatsit) and we were discussing DOHC conversions today- that, combined with the OP's forum name, lead me to jump to entirely the wrong conclusion

You could talk to Martec about a twin cam Imp conversion as well, didn't quite work out.
If you are looking at a small light weight twin cam engine to replace the A series, then what about the Rover K series? The 1.4 doesn't go pop like the 1.8 version does and it has more power in standard form than a B series TC and is loads lighter to boot.

Zetec would be cheaper IMHO. Direct bolt onto a type 9 and you can run them on a webber carb with very little cost. The Banger crowd do it a lot using mk3 fiesta parts.
Engine mounts are easy too since I made a set for my own car!

Fair point Ben, but if you are looking for a small engine that won't over stress the standard back axle and would be cheap to tax as under 1400cc then the K series is a good option IMHO.
By the way did you get my email last night?

Agreed. The axle is the weak link but there are options as we know.
Weigh up the costs, the advantages and disadvantages and then do it!
Replied this afternoon Chris :-)

With the way the DVLA are getting with car mods, I'd just do the BMW head swap as you are keeping the same engine as far as they are concerned. TR7 axle would cure the back end problems, as for the gearbox, M*n*r conversion of a Type 9 should slot in lovely. Try and keep it looking as boggo as possible, some MOT gits have been 'rewarded' for shopping modded cars.....
