Atleast thats the way i feel about it at the mo.......
Popped a core plug on the M25 whilst on the way to Peterborough, cooked itself and screwed one big end and one Piston, block is possibly scrap too.
Wouldn't have minded but the core plugs were new and i didnt even fit them!...
RAC managed to find a replacement but that popped about 5 miles up the road too.

Sorry to here about the breakdown Gary, we were wondering why you hadn't turned up. Shouldn't be to much of a problem to fix but that hole where the core plug fits doesn't look to clever. Was that instant gasket/ silicon put in by the RAC or was it there previously?

Yea the instant was used by the RAC man when he fitted the second plug, unfortunatly by then tho internal damage had already been done, when i took the head off, number 1 piston was slapping about like a prick in a bucket so either the piston or Bore has warped.. hopfully the piston as thats scrap due to scoring.

Hopefully the bore is OK. They can take a bit of stick as I found out recently. However it may be worth getting the head checked out to as they are not so hardy. They, allegedly, are prone to hairline cracking when they get hot. Let's hope yours is OK.

Damn.!
I commiserate.
Had one fall out myself - fitted by the engine reconditioners who bored my block.
Didn't cook the motor - but as it was the one between the rear of the block and the backplate, the whole engine/transmission had to be separated to refit it.
If you want something done properly...

Hi Gary, my thoughts are with you, it must have been frightening being stuck where you were on the worst road in the country
I am sure with you knowledge you will have it back up and running soon.
Missed you being at peterborough but on the bright side you may have missed the poring rain on the way back
I am amazed the RAC chap got a core plug but not surprised it popped out very soon after.
I stopped off at South Mims Services and got approached by 3 young chaps, one dressed as if he had come out of the 1970 complete with hairy top lip! Think he paid the Marina club a visit during the show.
They said their Allegro was dead and could I help!
It turned out they had done very little checking before running the rust coloured engine and I have never seen a fan belt so loose and worn to a thin vee with chucks out of it. I asked was it hot? They said yeah, is was near the end! Starter did not turn the engine over, so I assumed engine was seized. It was only on leaving I remembered I had a socket for the crank pulley nut so I went back over and the engine did turn so their news was not as bad as I had thought but they were left waiting for the recovery man to come
They will need, oil (as they said it had little in it!) Water, and new fan belt and hammer to get the starter engaged and they may get it going.
I managed to dry out the boot of water I had in the car when I got home and I think the noise I can hear may be rear axle but that will be another day.

Update. On the possitive side the block has survived so that can live another day. Number one piston had shrunk by 20 thou! no wonder it was slapping about in the bore... Amazingly the other 3 are still perfectly serviceable.
