Insurance Query

I just insured the pickup today at just over £100 including comprehensive cover and secure storage away from my home, or on my property - which I though was good.

One of the questions that I was asked was whether I would drive to work in it, which for me would be a No - so my insurance is Social, Domestic and Pleasure only.

I notice that a number of forum members do drive theirs to work, does your insurance cost you more?

Mine didn't cost any more to be able to drive to and from work Chris but I did do mine as a joint venture i.e both the SDL and the Mumford on the same policy ;)

Gary.

When I was getting quotes back in January it always cost more for commuting as well as Social, Domestic & Pleasure use.

i use all my cars to commute and haven't asked if it would be cheaper without as always have it on and its worth it just to put a smile on my face to and from work ;)
i know on regular policies
SDP = CHEAPEST
SDP & Commuting = more expensive
SDP & Business = even more expensive.
SDP & Business + Goods + getting very expensive

the difference between SDP + Commute and Business is not a great deal (again depending on occupation, some are better risks than others) but gets more expensive if you add open driving on any of them It really ups the price (any driver) but then the risk becomes higher as the company dosen't know what the Drivers history is like, could be a 17 year old nutter or a 75 year old doddery nutter lol and as such load the premium..

Hi Chris, I have a block policy for 4 classics. 1 x Marina pick up, 1 x 10cwt Van, 1 x Marina 1.3 SDl and a 998 Austin mini. Each car is insured to drive to and from work, social and domestic, unlimited mileage and the policy is fully comprehensive with 2 named drivers. My premium per year is £146.60 and broken down its £35.65 per car to insure!

it would depend the question should be do you use the vehicle to travel to a single place of work (commuting) or different places of work (Business use) do you carry goods/ samples / tools etc to different places of work (GOODS)
If you do voluntary work, SDP Would be enough cover provided you didn't get paid more tah (with us) 40 p per mile expenses, over that amount you'd need Commute or business,
does that make sense?

Insurance terminolgy can be a minefield, always read your documents to make sure you know what you have and more importantly what you dont..
one of the easiest way to get an endorsement on your driving license is the Driving Other Cars extention, (DOC) also know as "i can drive any other car cant i as i have fully comp" well Yes you do provided :

1. you are old enough (different companys have different age restrictions)
2. The car is insured (min TP Only) by another person
3. You do not own the car
4. You have the owners permission
5. the car is Taxed and if needed MOT'd
any of the above missing you are driving uninsured Gets an IN10 pn your license fine from the magistrates and higher premiums at renewal..

other offences that can really increase your premiums
CU80 Mobile phone use
DR Offences Drink or Drugs related with a failure to give a sample usually worse than the highest levels ( assumed that if you dont want to give a sample it's goptta be high)

and always be honest with your insurer some companies will invalidate your insurance if you lie then have a claim.

another tip when setting up insurance check what the terms are when / if you cancel a policy early, Good companies will just charge you time on risk and a cancellation fee not so good will charge you that plus short term rates which can be all the premium even though you haven't got the car, and if you fail to stop a policy when you've sold the car you're breaking the law as you cannot insure a car you donty own and if the new keeper insures the car it would be dual insured again an offence...
if theres anything on your policys that you're not sure about feel free to pm me and if i can explain it for you i will and if i don't know the answer will try and find out for you

That's nothing, Paul Utting was saying he had all ten (or is it nine now...?) of his cars on the same policy for about the same price! That was with Footman James.

Hopefully now I have a 1.3 rather than a 1.8 things should be a lot easier for me come renewal time.
