Morris Ital pickup..

Hi all, I have today seen a rather sorry looking Ital pickup. I am considering saving this. It needs a sill, two doors, a tailgate and rear arches. Also a repair to drivers A pillar. Other than that, it seems very solid. The rust is very iscolated. It has been dry stored for 14 years and therefore does not run. Are all the above bits available? It would also mean that eventually, I would have to sell my saloon. The saloon hardly ever gets used as I am terrified of getting it wet! A bit tricky living in the UK. What do you think? Is it worth saving? They are rather rare aren't they? Can you get top boxes for them to cover the load bay?

Tail gates are hard to find.
Don't worry about getting your car wet, if you don't drive it it will just rust and not get used and a waste of a restoration.
Every show mine has been to this year it has got very wet inside and out :rolls:
But on the bright side, normally my car would only be driven in the dry so at least I have a chance at sorting out all the leaks as it was a real test with all the rain.

Cars do not do well laid up for years or months. The pick up will tell you this.
Regular use keeps all working fine, I have not suffered with seized clutch plates or brakes etc etc etc.
If the car don't move you may as well sell it, hard but true.

I have an offside rear quarter if that helps.Outer sills are available from various sources including the MMOC.Certainly worth saving, much rarer than a mini or minor ;)

From your list of rust, only the tailgate is special to the pickup, so you should be able to get most panels. Rear arches should be the same as Coupe.

It's worth checking the buck (load bed) as they rust out from underneath as there are lots of places underneath to trap muck.

Also the wheel arch within the load bed will rust, you'll often see plates welded in on otherwise good cars.

There are fibreglass and aluminium tops around. Also BL sold them with a canvas top or a tonneau.

There are a number of pickups in rebuild at the moment, it makes for something different from a saloon or coupe.

An Ital pick up makes more sense from a practical point of view for me, but realistically, how much could I get from the sale of the saloon? Probably not a lot. I love the saloon to bits, I really do but the lack of use is such a waste.

The floor of the pickup, underneath at least was mint from what I could see, it had a car dashboard which I thought odd? I didn't climb up onto the truck to see above but from what I have seen, it looks solid enough. But how much is it worth? What should I offer? I was thinking no more than £250 as it is none running and they lifted it onto the bed with a fork lift truck. I have been offered a free storage place for it which I will take up if I buy it.

Oh ok, I thought the commercials had a different dash. Yes, I do want it, very much. I want to save it. But, whats it worth?

£250 is a good price, but the rear axle could be worth that if it was broken up. So probably anything up to about £400. They generally attract a greater price than the equivalent saloon, estate or coupe.

There is 2 pick ups for sale at the moment from forum members. One is in the advert section of this site and the other is on ebay with a fixed price of £450. If the scrap man knows what its potentially worth then he may knock back your offer of £250 but by all means start at that price or even be cheeky and start at £200. If you don't ask you wont get! :o

Philip, if you really want it then get it and treat it as a long term project. I personally would not sell the saloon, I'd get it out and use it. My Mumford has only just gone on the road , it has been to one show and stood in the pouring rain and the boot wells filled with water but it dried out. Not bad considering I said I wouldn't take it out in the rain

I may not sell the saloon to be honest. I will see how much he wants for the pick up, I am not spending £400 on it though, the rear diff, car or not doesn't bother me as I will not be towing with it. I like the idea of it and it seems decent enough but not £400 decent. It will probably be a money pit anyway. I want it, it will be fun getting it running again and a real sense of achievement as well as saving another rare unloved Marina/Ital.

If you can get it at a good price then go for it! :)

As for the saloon-get it out and use it. Try and avoid the worst of the winter salty roads but done worry too much about the rain.

It's well worth getting anyway to be honest, if it does turn into a money pit there's easily £400 worth of parts there, better than seeing it all go to the crusher and nothing useful becoming of it.

Cheers guys, I am going to try and get it. I see there is a pick up for sale on here that keeps popping up? I really don't understand the new classifieds structure! Is that someone on here?
