Happens all the time. Bits of frame of motorbikes-the bit with the frame number on sell on eBay with a V5 all the time. Obviously the bit of frame is useless.......

Its gone.......what have i missed?

ringing or re-shell if you have a vin plate on a badly damaged shell whats the problem with getting a replacement shell from a beakers and swapping the vin plate i put my crash car back on the road with parts from a car going to the beakers

Dare I suggest it's not legal!! I don't agree with the high cost of fuel,road tax and poor roads in this once great nation of ours but I don't condone people who think that they are above the law and shouldn't pay their way like the rest of us.I see loads of minis that are clearly "ringers" and I'm well aware of the Marinas that have been subjected to the same treatment.The danger is that if you're found out you'll be liable for a hefty fine,back duty and a vehicle with a dubious identity might well be seized and crushed.I shall now climb down from my soapbox and double check my list

Practical Classics have been running a campaign about reshelling classics for a couple of years now,and they think it should be allowed before all the 70`s and 80`s cars have gone, personally i think it should be ok to save a rotten car using the shell from a better one if it is available, this is where MG, Triumph, Jag and Mini owners have a distinct advantage over the rest of us with less desirable cars, they can just pick up the phone and buy a new shell for their logbook and build a new car!
As Matt says it is of course illegal to swap plates and call that car something it is clearly not, there is a points system in operation where you are required to use at least 70% of the donor cars components to assume that cars identity, which should then be verified by the ministry of transport.

The DVLA run a points system (it's not quite as simple as 70%)- suspension, steering, axles, engine, gearbox etc are worth a certain number of points each and you must retain a certain number of these things to retain the identity- plus the original chassis or monocoque.

It's worth noting that like for like new replacements are allowed under the points scheme, but technically not second hand ones. That said my last Land Rover had had a second hand replacement engine, gearbox and at least one axle, but because they didn't record axle numbers etc there's no way of telling- it was all period correct so the only bit that stuck out was the engine, and that's only because the chassis number was a petrol one and it had a diesel in! This is mainly to stop people really taking the mick with modifications and isn't really aimed at us, who mostly make fairly minor mods and replacements with the aim of keeping our cars going and to improve driveability.

The issue comes with sticking a tax exempt V5 on a non tax exempt car. This definitely comes under the heading of "taking the mick" and- in the admittedly unlikely case you get caught- they can actually take your car and crush it. Generally you'll just have a hefty fine for the tax owed though. The reason this annoys me though is that far and away the easiest means of solving the problem is simply to remove tax exemption completely- which would rather spoil things for those with vehicles built before the (admittedly arbitrary) cut off date.

Before anyone complains about the cut off date, well there has to be one somewhere and although it would be nice (and would I'm sure help survivability of 70's cars) I don't see why it should be extended as some people seem to think it should be; what should the government care if a few bits of 70's steel get crushed? My view is that we're damn lucky to have what we've got and should be happy with that, instead of kicking up a fuss (and, to get back on topic, blatantly flaunting da rulz) and risking losing it.

Not sure about the detailed legality, but I would have thought the log book could not be sold on its own. Without a bodyshell or any other identifying parts of the original car, to use the logbook to potentially disguise the identity of another must be illegal?

I think many have taken the mick as has been said by making a car tax exempt when it was not by swapping the identity.
I think this guy is also selling a chassis plate but that is not 70% of the car so if any one uses it they risk loosing their car probably after spending out money and a fine.

I do wish they had kept the rolling tax exempt running as I am only 10 months out But it won't effect me at all if they do scrap it, I already pay £220 a year and another £245+ on the other car.
