Looking for tips chaps.
Am about to fit another front screen to my estate.
I was considering the use of sealant or not.
The old screen was not leaking (it got smashed..), but I found that some sealant had been put in around the outside edge of the rubber.
Probably applied after the screen had been fitted.

I was thinking of using a small bead of silicone around the inside of the rubber where the actual glass fits - then a light smear around the outer edge of the rebate so that the rubber slides in easily but also has an additional sealant.

Any comments.?

Hi Kilroy, the Jury is out with me on this one...I tend to dislike Silicone sealant as it eventually turns to a yellowish rubbery mess after a few years whereas the proper 3M Windscreen sealer stays as it should and has the benefit of being black , I use aerosol waxoyl as a lubricant when fitting which helps keep Mr Rust at bay, and I apply a bead of 3M sealer around the glass to rubber seal as well as around the rubber before it goes in.
Very messy but it does work
You can clean up the sealer with paint degreaser from a bodyshop

It appears that the factory assembled the screen rubbers 'dry' from new. That is - with no sealant anywhere.
Anyone confirm that.?
Was it anticipated that they would be watertight thus.?

Yes mine leaked immediately and was sealed at a garage that did the first service, but they tried to tell me the tappet rattle was normal, dad supplied a new set of tappet barrels that had turned and I fitted them. The old ones had a few that had no hardened surface and would have damaged the cams.
